Chapter Twenty-Eight: A Visitor from Nanyang
A Visitor from Nanyang
“Try to touch him, if you dare!” As the words echoed, the hand that was barely half an inch away abruptly halted. The spiritual energy within the palm seemed to be absorbed entirely by the voice, vanishing without a trace. Upon hearing the threat, Li Yu froze as if cursed, unable to move, cold sweat beading on his forehead and streaming down his temples and cheeks. He swallowed hard, still holding the chopping pose, and slowly, almost mechanically, turned around.
With a thud, Li Yu fell to his knees, his once triumphant expression now replaced by terror, as though confronted with some dreadful apparition. His lips trembled incessantly, unable to utter a word.
At that moment, Bai Qi gazed at the figure emerging behind Li Yu, but his vision was already blurred, unable to discern anything clearly. He could only make out the remaining men who had previously followed Li Yu, felled like stalks of grass, lying in neat rows.
Li Yu, who was closer, inexplicably began to kowtow repeatedly, his forehead striking the ground with loud, rhythmic thumps. On the other side, the wolf with the severed arm merely glanced at the direction in front of Bai Qi. His left hand had already released the corpse, his mouth gaped wider, but his neck seemed to be squeezed tight, his eyes rolled upward. In moments, his legs jerked and his body collapsed to the ground, his fate uncertain.
This bewildering scene left the dazed Bai Qi at a loss. When he managed to collect his senses and looked again at Li Yu, who had been kowtowing, he saw that a head with closed eyes had somehow rolled to the ground nearby, lifeless and devoid of pain, its death silent and final.
No matter how much Bai Qi’s mind raced, his body could no longer sustain him; he toppled backward like a wooden stake. He expected to hit the ground, but at the instant he lost consciousness, a sweet fragrance enveloped him. He was caught by a soft, warm body, though he lacked the strength to contemplate what had happened, and darkness closed in.
