Zhang Xiluo’s conversation with her mother was interrupted. The two exchanged a glance, and Zhang Xiluo rose to answer the door. Her mother stood up as well.

“Luo Luo, I’ll get it.”

“I’ll go.” Zhang Xiluo glanced at her mother and reassured her not to worry.

When Zhang Xiluo opened the door, she saw Mu Peipei standing outside the gate. She was wearing a red coat, her flamboyant personality on full display—one hand on her hip, the other pointing at Zhang Xiluo.

“Come out. I have something to ask you. If you won’t come out, fine. I’ll make sure everyone hears about your glorious deeds.” The moment Mu Peipei saw Zhang Xiluo, she raised her voice even louder, like a shrew making a scene in the street.

“Wait while I put on a coat.” Zhang Xiluo closed the door. Her mother had already come to her side, frowning.

“Luo Luo, isn’t that the Mu family’s daughter? When did you become acquainted with her?” Her mother wanted nothing to do with the Mu family. The Zhang family’s company had no need for their investment.

Especially after learning that the Mu family had returned with ulterior motives, they had drawn a clear line between them, unwilling to become entangled with them again.

“We’re not acquainted. It’s probably a misunderstanding. I accompanied Xu Xinyi to meet Mu Changjia, and Mu Peipei rear-ended my car. That’s all. Don’t worry, Mom. I’ll go see what she wants.” Zhang Xiluo put on her coat and smiled at her mother. “Mom, I know how to handle this. Trust me.”

Hearing her say that, her mother could only nod and let her leave, though she remained worried.

Her father, who had said nothing until then, walked over and placed both hands on his wife’s shoulders.

“Luo Luo has grown up. She can handle things on her own. Trust her.”

He felt that Zhang Xiluo had truly become more mature since returning home. He believed she was capable of resolving some problems herself.

Her mother sighed, nodded, and sat back down with her husband to continue watching television.

Zhang Xiluo stepped outside and stood before Mu Peipei, keeping a safe distance between them. Mu Peipei was spoiled rotten and perfectly capable of resorting to violence at the slightest disagreement.

Deliberately crashing into her car was proof enough.

“Zhang Xiluo, how could you leave my brother alone in the hospital and not even ask after him? He was beaten because of you, after all. You don’t go to see how he is—doesn’t your conscience hurt?” Mu Peipei accused angrily.

“Mu Changjia’s business has nothing to do with me. I have neither the standing nor the reason to care about him,” Zhang Xiluo replied coldly. She wondered whether Mu Peipei’s mind worked differently from everyone else’s. Even she knew that Mu Changjia had been beaten by Li Mingye because he couldn’t keep his mouth shut.

“Then why did you go see Li Mingye? Didn’t you say there was no chance for the two of you anymore? You told me to pursue him while you went and threw yourself at him. You’re disgusting. I hate women who act two-faced. Zhang Xiluo, I hate you.”

At the mention of Li Mingye’s name, Zhang Xiluo’s brows drew together at once. She took a step forward.

“Let’s talk somewhere else.”

“Afraid someone might hear? Then I’ll say it right here.” Thinking she had found Zhang Xiluo’s weakness, Mu Peipei deliberately raised her voice. “What makes you think you have the right to cling to your ex-husband?”

Zhang Xiluo instinctively glanced toward the house. She did not want her parents to hear. They would certainly worry.

“You’re such a terrible woman. You talk about getting divorced while shamelessly currying favor with him, and then you seduce my brother too. I’d better let everyone know what kind of person you really are.”

“There’s no point talking to you when you’re being so unreasonable.” Irritated, Zhang Xiluo turned to leave. Mu Peipei immediately chased after her, and just as she was about to grab her, someone stepped between them.

Ouyang Chen blocked Mu Peipei’s path. He was dressed in sportswear, a towel wrapped around his wrist. His gaze toward Mu Peipei was cold and distant, his voice carrying a clear warning.

“Stay away from her.”

“Oh my God. You really are something. You’re even with Ouyang Chen now…” Mu Peipei looked as though she had uncovered a shocking secret. She turned to Zhang Xiluo with open disdain. “No wonder my brother said you were trouble. I believe him now.”

“I take back everything I said to you before. I think you’re disgusting, you shameless slut!”

Ouyang Chen’s expression darkened.

“You should be grateful that I don’t hit women. I don’t want to hear another word slandering my girlfriend. Get lost.” Taking advantage of the opportunity, Ouyang Chen openly declared his relationship with Zhang Xiluo. “Those men have nothing to do with her, especially your brother. If I hear him running his mouth again, I’ll beat him too.”

His imposing presence frightened Mu Peipei into silence. She no longer dared to squawk. Her eyes flicked several times between Ouyang Chen and Zhang Xiluo before she turned angrily and walked away.

Zhang Xiluo stepped out from behind Ouyang Chen and wanted to explain things to Mu Peipei, but Ouyang Chen stopped her and gently shook his head.

Following his gaze, Zhang Xiluo spotted a reporter hiding in a corner. Mu Peipei had come prepared. She wanted to make a spectacle of the matter and smear both Zhang Xiluo and Li Mingye.

“Let’s go home first.”

Ouyang Chen took Zhang Xiluo’s hand. Her body jolted, and she instinctively tried to pull away, but his grip only tightened.

When they opened the door, Ouyang Chen still had not let go. The sight of them holding hands left Zhang Xiluo’s parents stunned. They looked at each other, then simultaneously frowned at their daughter.

“Uncle, Auntie, sorry to bother you.”

Zhang Xiluo tugged at her hand several times before Ouyang Chen finally released it. Smiling, he greeted her parents politely.

“Luo Luo, you and Ouyang Chen… Are you two…”

“Thank you, Ouyang Chen. You can leave now.” Zhang Xiluo hurriedly cut in. She went to her mother and linked arms with her. “Ouyang Chen helped me out. Otherwise, Mu Peipei wouldn’t have let the matter go.”

“Is that what happened?” Her mother turned to Ouyang Chen doubtfully.

Ouyang Chen smiled faintly.

“I’m pursuing Luo Luo, but she rejected me. That’s all right. I’ll keep trying, and I certainly won’t let anyone have the chance to slander her.”

Zhang Xiluo’s face turned deathly pale.

Was Ouyang Chen insane?

He had actually come right to her parents and said all that!

Zhang Xiluo glared at him, silently urging him to shut up, but he acted as though he had not seen her expression and continued to promise them, “Uncle, Auntie, please rest assured. As long as Luo Luo is willing, I’ll remain by her side forever.”

“Ouyang Chen, you should leave now,” Zhang Xiluo said unhappily, issuing him a clear dismissal.

Ouyang Chen bid farewell to her parents and turned to leave. Zhang Xiluo wanted nothing more than to poke several holes in his back. He had gone out of his way to create trouble for her.

After he closed the door behind him and left, Zhang Xiluo frowned deeply, her mind racing as she tried to think of how to explain everything to her parents.

“Luo Luo, are you and Ouyang Chen together? How could you keep something this important from us?” Her mother pulled Zhang Xiluo back to the sofa.

“Compared with that Li Mingye, Ouyang Chen is better,” her father said. As far as he was concerned, any man was acceptable so long as he was not Li Mingye.

“Ouyang Chen won’t do either. His family…”

Her parents began discussing the matter between themselves, completely ignoring Zhang Xiluo’s explanations. She pressed a hand to her forehead, feeling a terrible headache coming on.
