Chapter Thirty-Nine: Xu Hao Watches the Drama Unfold
Xu Hao was a Sagittarius, whose greatest hobby was making friends. He was the kind who didn’t discriminate—meat or vegetable, he welcomed all. He had acquaintances from every walk of life. So, naturally, the news about Du Xin and Du Zhiye’s fight reached his ears, along with several photos.
Xu Hao had spent half the day gossiping, and now, feeling quite pleased, he wanted to share the juicy tidbit with someone. That someone was Jiang Yingnan.
“Your future wife just got beaten up,” Xu Hao announced as soon as he stepped into Jiang Yingnan’s office.
Jiang Yingnan didn’t even lift his eyelids. He replied flatly, “What nonsense are you spouting?”
Future wife?
He still had no idea whether the girl favored by Madam Huang of the Wan family was round or square!
Xu Hao clicked his tongue twice, “You haven’t heard yet! Du Xin got beaten up.”
After speaking, Xu Hao stared at Jiang Yingnan, waiting for his reaction. But after a long wait, Jiang Yingnan didn’t even spare him a glance.
Xu Hao couldn’t believe it. Was Jiang Yingnan really not curious at all? In the group chat earlier, he’d heard that when the Du family’s heiress started fighting, people were so excited they couldn’t stay seated.
He was, in fact, the most active in the group. Some wanted to ask questions but feared getting burned. The Xu family was wealthy, and Xu Hao was close to Jiang Yingnan, so he had no such worries—he was just happy to indulge.
Xu Hao dangled another bait, “Guess who beat her up?”
“Not interested,” Jiang Yingnan replied coolly, and thinking of Xu Hao’s earlier reference to Du Xin, he frowned, “I broke up with Du Xin.”
Xu Hao was stunned, struck by an even juicier scoop. He was so excited, he nearly lost his bearings. He stood up from the sofa and strode to Jiang Yingnan’s desk, agitated. “When did this happen?” Thinking of the fight between Du Xin and Du Zhiye, Xu Hao pressed, “Was it because of Du Zhiye?”
At the mention of Du Zhiye’s name, Jiang Yingnan recalled last night’s dream and replied irritably, “It has nothing to do with her.”
Xu Hao wasn’t convinced. He stopped beating around the bush and challenged directly, “Don’t try to fool me. If it wasn’t about Du Zhiye, why would the two heiresses of the Du family get into such a brawl at the company?”
Xu Hao grew more excited as he spoke. “You have no idea—those two delicate beauties were actually quite fierce in their fight. I heard they even smashed up the office.” He glanced at the unmoved Jiang Yingnan and continued, “I have pictures. Want to see?”
Jiang Yingnan tapped a few keys and clicked his mouse, then responded coldly, “It has nothing to do with me.”
Xu Hao fell silent for a moment, sizing up Jiang Yingnan before curling his lips. This guy really was dull. Still, his looks certainly attracted women.
Thinking of the two Du family ladies, Xu Hao inwardly mocked Jiang Yingnan as a handsome troublemaker.
...
When Jiang Yingnan left work, he ran into Du Xin in the parking lot.
She looked pitiful—her hair was a mess, her left cheek was red and swollen, covered in scratches. Jiang Yingnan frowned and still walked over. “Why are you here?”
Du Xin’s tears fell as soon as she saw Jiang Yingnan. She took two steps forward, reaching out to tug at his sleeve, but Jiang Yingnan deftly avoided her touch. Du Xin stared at her hand and gave a bitter smile, squeezing out a few words after several seconds, “Why did we break up?”
Jiang Yingnan turned his face away, not meeting her eyes, rubbing his brow in irritation. “You’re a good person. It’s my issue.”
Du Xin laughed. “It’s because of Du Zhiye.”
The last thing Jiang Yingnan wanted to hear now was Du Zhiye’s name. He replied impatiently, “It’s not.”
His tone only strengthened Du Xin’s conviction that their breakup was because of Du Zhiye.
She took a breath, asking with a hint of desperation, “Can’t we not break up? I can...” Pretend I don’t know about you and Du Zhiye.
“Du Xin,” Jiang Yingnan called her name, coldly. “Don’t come here again.”
He turned to leave. He’d liked Du Xin because she knew how to advance and retreat, understood boundaries, but her persistence today disgusted him, and he even regretted not ending things sooner.
Du Xin watched Jiang Yingnan’s departing figure, smiling silently, her face full of ridicule. She shouted, “Jiang Yingnan, Du Zhiye doesn’t love you. She seduced you only to get revenge on me and my mother.”
