Chapter Twenty-Nine: Has a Girlfriend
Jiang Yingnan didn't leave the club until nearly dawn. He had drunk quite a bit that night, and his steps were unsteady. The young woman had been following him, neither too close nor too far, the entire time.
As they descended the steps, Jiang Yingnan lost his footing for a moment, not paying attention. The young woman hurried over to steady him. Jiang Yingnan paused, then turned back with a delayed reaction. Seeing the anxiety on her face, he frowned, shook off her supporting hand, and lowered his gaze to ask, “Do you like me?”
A flush crept up her cheeks. She met his eyes and nodded. In truth, she had already confessed her feelings more than once at the table earlier, but Jiang Yingnan hadn't paid her any mind.
He licked his lips. The girl was attractive, dimples appearing when she smiled, making her look gentle and obedient. Yet, compared to Du Zhiye, her beauty was much more subdued. Still, she was a beauty in her own right.
“I already have a girlfriend,” Jiang Yingnan said coldly, then headed toward the parking lot. He had never cared much for women; his affair with Du Zhiye had only happened because she was Tao Ranming’s fiancée.
The young woman stood frozen for a long moment before any expression surfaced—regret, but mostly unwillingness to give up.
In the parking lot, Chen Yang spotted Jiang Yingnan from a distance, quickly got out, and opened the car door for him. Jiang Yingnan slid into the back seat, massaging his temples. Chen Yang glanced in the rearview mirror, saw that Jiang Yingnan had closed his eyes, and started the car in silence.
Just as the car began to move, Xu Hao burst out of the club and stepped in front of the car, not bothering with pleasantries. He pulled open the door and got into the back seat, speaking to Chen Yang at the wheel, “Yangzi, give me a ride.”
Chen Yang didn’t dare decide on his own, and instinctively looked to Jiang Yingnan. Hearing the commotion, Jiang Yingnan lazily lifted his eyelids, glanced at Xu Hao, and then nodded to Chen Yang. Receiving approval, Chen Yang drove off without a word.
Xu Hao and Jiang Yingnan lived in the same villa district, though not on the same street. Once settled, Xu Hao turned to Jiang Yingnan. “Are you serious about Du Xin?”
He’d overheard Jiang Yingnan rejecting the young woman just now, word for word.
Jiang Yingnan leaned back with his eyes closed, and didn’t so much as twitch in response to Xu Hao’s question.
After watching him for a while and seeing no reaction, Xu Hao lost interest, but as he looked away, he couldn’t help reminding him, “If you are serious, then you should cut things off with Du Zhiye.”
They all liked to have their fun, but there were limits. If word got out that Jiang Yingnan had affairs with both sisters, it wouldn’t just be the Du family’s reputation at stake, but the Jiang family’s as well.
That night, Du Zhiye slept fitfully. She’d just managed to fall asleep in the morning when she slipped into a nightmare.
In her dream, she wore something sultry and tried to seduce Jiang Yingnan, her fingers trailing over his firm chest as she whispered flirtatious words. The left corner of his mouth lifted in a slight smile. He seized her chin, leaned in closer and closer, their breaths mingling. Just as Du Zhiye thought he would kiss her, Jiang Yingnan suddenly pushed her away, sneering.
“What are you thinking?” he said, looking down at her as if she were a bug. “Did you really think I would kiss you?”
He laughed, his gaze contemptuous. “Du Zhiye, you really are shameless.”
No sooner had he spoken than the once-quiet room filled with people, all with mocking smiles on their faces. They came from all directions, every gaze fixed on her, as though their eyes could strip her bare.
They all chanted the same phrase, “Du Zhiye, you really are shameless, seducing your own sister’s boyfriend.”
