Chapter 150: An Unexpected Result (Part Two)
"Ahhhh!" A female nurse in the crowd let out a scream.
If Fred had been the only spy, this would undoubtedly have been a brilliant defensive counter-attack, and the subsequent events would have had nothing to do with Steve.
However, a truly meticulous espionage operation never relies on just a single plan or a single team.
Fred was done for. Right before his death, he used his remaining strength to hurl the vial of blue serum high into the air.
Time seemed to slow down infinitely as more than thirty people watched the vial spinning through the air. If no one caught it, it would spell absolute disaster.
At that very moment, a soldier wearing a helmet marked with the letters MP—representing the military police—steadily caught the serum with one hand.
Seeing this, several high-ranking officials secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
Only a few people reacted in time, and naturally, Peggy was among them. She immediately pivoted her weapon and shouted while firing, "He's a spy too!"
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
"Rat-tat-tat!"
The sounds of a pistol and a Thompson submachine gun, famously known as the Chicago Typewriter, filled the entire laboratory.
Most people were stunned, never expecting that even the two military policemen guarding the laboratory's final door were enemies.
Who could possibly dare to raid the serum at a time like this?
The only answer, of course, was Hitler's men!
If America and Nazi Germany both possessed an army of super soldiers, the war would simply return to the starting line.
Right now, no one had the luxury of overthinking. In the blink of an eye, Peggy and the submachine gun-wielding spy MP decided the outcome, with Peggy accurately gunning down the spy. Unfortunately, the remaining MP grabbed the blue serum vial and fled on the run.
"After him!" Colonel Phillips shouted.
Inside the laboratory, theoretically the only two people capable of fighting moved: Peggy rushed out first, while Steve anxiously looked over at Dr. Abraham, noticing the doctor's forehead was bleeding from an impact, but he appeared otherwise fine.
"The doctor is fine! Go get the serum back!" Mei Mumu barked a sharp command, instantly jolting Steve back to his senses.
Steve, who had just completed a magnificent transformation from a weakling into a powerhouse, snapped to attention. He adopted a standard running posture and bolted up the stairs, his bulging pectoral muscles trembling rhythmically as he closely pursued Peggy.
The shaken colonel and congressman finally regained their composure.
The colonel walked over and patted Mei Mumu on the shoulder.
Senator Brandt grasped Mei Mumu's hand with immense emotion: "Thank you, Mr. Strange. I never expected a businessman to possess such courage. On behalf of the United States of America, I thank you!"
No one present was blind; if not for this Mr. Mei just now, Dr. Abraham probably would have been finished.
More than one person realized that after multiple adjustments, the true formula was known only to the doctor himself. If the serum was stolen, the enemy could at best study it and come up with an approximation. Just as the Super Soldier program had finally achieved phased success, if the doctor were killed, the entire project would certainly go down the drain.
Thinking of this terrifying consequence, everyone broke out in a cold sweat.
Seeing that the elderly doctor only had a bumped forehead and some minor surface wounds, the crowd showered the doctor with warm solicitations while simultaneously lavishing endless praise upon Mei Mumu the businessman.
At this moment, not a single person had any inkling that Mei had tampered with the doctor...
"You're welcome! This is what every patriot should do." Mei Mumu accepted the praise shamelessly.
Over there, with bodily enhancements surpassing ordinary mortals combined with the power of the Holy Light, if Steve and Peggy still failed to catch the spy, they might as well just drop dead.
If Mei Mumu were some bumpkin lacking worldly experience, he would surely be amazed to see an enhanced Steve leaping back and forth across the roofs of speeding taxicabs.
Unfortunately, Mei Mumu hailed from the Earth of 2018, and had even time-traveled back to 1943 from the Marvel universe of 2016. What kind of freaks hadn't he seen?
This level of speed and strength, roughly twice that of an ordinary mortal... Mei Modu had something to say: Pardon me, no need to chatter, I can do that too. The opponent is just too weak; I won't bother stepping in.
If he, the Great Archmage Mei Mumu, had to activate double-speed acceleration just to deal with a mortal spy, it would be far too beneath his dignity.
Besides, did the Americans ever pay Mei Modu a single cent of salary?
That small fry could just be left to Captain America.
Soon, the outcome was revealed, further confirming Mei Modu's conjecture—the history of this parallel world possessed an astonishing degree of inertia, broadly speaking.
Slightly differing from the plot in the movie, Hydra, led by the Red Skull this time, dispatched a spy squad numbering a full thirty operatives.
The twenty-odd hidden sentries the Americans had stationed near the Brooklyn antique shop were practically wiped out in a single encounter by the reconnoitered Hydra unit.
It took nothing less than the peerless sharpshooter Peggy, coupled with a rampaging Steve, to wipe out these annoying Hydra members.
However, the guy holding the serum had already boarded a pre-arranged vehicle and headed straight for the docks.
At the docks, when the Hydra member carrying the serum hijacked a child and opened fire on Steve, Steve used his immense strength to rip a door off a taxicab, employing it as a shield.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!" The opponent fired three consecutive shots, but all the small-caliber pistol bullets were blocked by Steve using the car door.
Realizing the situation was turning south, the spy hijacked a child and fled toward the riverside along a predetermined evacuation route, where a single-man submersible awaited.
Unfortunately, the poor bastard didn't even have time to jump into the river before he was taken down by one of Steve's signature Paladin abilities: Avenger's Shield.
That's right!
In the game World of Warcraft, this skill is simply referred to as the 'flying shield'!
A massive taxicab door was hurled by Steve like a boomerang. Under the gaze of nearly a hundred ordinary citizens near the docks, the car door, radiating holy light, spun through the air, curving past a blind spot in the spy's vision and flying in from the outer side of two pillars near the pier.
"Thud!" went the impact.
The spy had never imagined he would be struck by a huge car door coming from the completely unexpected reverse direction. He didn't even have time to bite down on the poison capsule hidden in his teeth before he collapsed stiffly on the spot.
"Hooray!"
"Great job!"
Seeing the muscular powerhouse Steve display overwhelming might to subdue an armed 'criminal' holding a child hostage with his bare hands, the American public burst into thunderous cheers.
Just as Steve thought he had perfectly subdued the spy, he was shocked to find that the serum had been smashed to pieces.
Even more unacceptable to the military was the dreadful news coming from the lab that Dr. Abraham Erskine had suffered a concussion from the fall!
"What?" A returning Steve was completely dumbfounded.
"Unfortunately, although Strange made a heroic dive to save the doctor's life, in the process of tackling him, the doctor's head struck the lab workbench. This caused the doctor to suffer a mild concussion. The crucial part is that he has temporarily forgotten the complete formula," Colonel Phillips said with a look of regret.
