Chapter Seventy-One: An Undercover Once More
Hearing this, Shen Qingdai found it rather odd. Didn’t this zombie open a detective agency just to conceal her identity? She hadn’t expected her to come, demanding payment for a commission. Yet, Shen Qingdai was not short of money. She nodded at Uncle Yun, then lowered her head to continue reading her fashion magazine.
Uncle Yun stood up, asked for the commission document, and turned to retrieve 160,000 Lang coins from a safe. Li Changqing was surprised at how smoothly things had gone.
“Thank you, Boss Shen,” Li Changqing said with a beaming smile, then contentedly turned to Li Minghao beside him. “Let’s go.”
Li Minghao was baffled. Weren’t they here to investigate a case? Why did it feel like they’d come to collect a debt?
With both Shen Qingdai and Uncle Yun present, he didn’t dare ask more. The two of them turned and left the office.
“This zombie is quite interesting,” Uncle Yun chuckled. “The man accompanying him is a martial artist too. There’s a strong, masculine energy about him—he must have trained in a genuine, orthodox style.”
Shen Qingdai slowly put down her magazine, eyes narrowed. “He’s clearly a zombie, yet he’s involved with the Shadow Cult and is entangled with the Thirty-Sixth Bureau’s exorcists.”
“Tell me, do you think those from the Thirty-Sixth Bureau know he’s a zombie? If they found out, what would they do?”
Uncle Yun considered for a moment. “I doubt they know. Organizations like the Thirty-Sixth Bureau would never cooperate with demons.”
“So, he brought someone here just to investigate me? Or perhaps this dock? How intriguing.”
She rolled her eyes thoughtfully, pushed open the office door, and walked into the corridor to look downstairs. Li Changqing and Li Minghao were opening their car doors, preparing to leave.
“Detective Li, I just remembered there’s a confidential matter I’d like to entrust to you. Please come upstairs alone.”
After returning to the office, Uncle Yun was still uncertain about her intentions. Li Changqing and Li Minghao exchanged glances.
“I’ll go up and see what’s going on. If there’s any danger, be ready to protect me,” Li Changqing said gravely.
He couldn’t understand why Shen Qingdai had suddenly called him back.
Soon, Li Changqing returned to the office and sat across from Shen Qingdai.
“Boss Shen, may I ask—?”
Shen Qingdai cradled a cup of coffee, lounging lazily on the soft sofa, eyes narrowed. “The person who came with you earlier is from the Thirty-Sixth Bureau, isn’t he?”
Li Changqing froze. Had they noticed something off about Li Minghao? If he admitted it, would Shen Qingdai suddenly attack him? No, if she intended to act, she wouldn’t be speaking in this tone.
“Yes,” Li Changqing nodded.
Shen Qingdai smiled. “They’re here to investigate this dock, aren’t they?” She took a sip of coffee; this was not difficult to guess.
Li Changqing sat on the sofa. “Boss Shen, why did you call me back? What is it you want to discuss?”
“I want you to work for me—report every move the Thirty-Sixth Bureau makes directly to me.”
“You mean, you want me to be a mole?”
Damn. Why did everyone love this game?
Li Changqing kept a cheerful face, but inwardly—
Shen Qingdai continued, “I don’t know why a zombie like you is involved with the Thirty-Sixth Bureau, but I’m sure they don’t know your real identity, right?”
“What if I told them? They’d kill you in an instant.”
Li Changqing’s expression darkened.
Shen Qingdai reached out with a teasing smile, hooking his chin with her finger. “Relax. As long as you agree to be my informant, you’ll be under my protection. I won’t treat you badly.”
“What’s in it for me?” Li Changqing asked, frowning.
She retorted, “You’re already in my hands—still expecting benefits?”
Li Changqing replied sincerely, “If you don’t give me enough incentive, you wouldn’t trust me to do the job, would you?”
“That’s true.” Shen Qingdai smiled, her eyes twinkling with a cold light. “You like money, don’t you? How much do you want?”
Li Changqing thought for a moment. “Five hundred thousand Lang coins a month!”
He figured it was worth a try—Shen Qingdai didn’t look like someone short on cash.
To his surprise, she frowned and refused. “Fifty thousand a month. After the job’s done, I’ll consider a bonus depending on my mood.”
She smiled sweetly, eyes glinting coldly. “All right, here’s your first task: at midnight the day after tomorrow, a demon will land at my dock. Notify the Thirty-Sixth Bureau—they must kill him.”
Not far away, Uncle Yun frowned slightly, already knowing who Shen Qingdai wanted dead—her fourth brother.
In ordinary wealthy families, brothers might turn against each other for inheritance. In this family of demons, the competition was even bloodier and more violent. Moreover, Shen Qingdai and her fourth brother, Shen Qingchi, had long been at odds.
“Remember, make sure that man named Bai is there—no one else can handle it,” Shen Qingdai added pointedly.
Li Changqing chuckled, “All I can do is relay the message. What the Thirty-Sixth Bureau does isn’t up to me.”
Leaving Shen Qingdai’s office, Li Changqing was left bewildered. Once again, he’d somehow become an informant. Maybe he should quit being a detective and just specialize in undercover work.
After getting into the car, Li Minghao asked curiously, “What did that demon want with you?”
“She wants me to be a mole and leak information about the Thirty-Sixth Bureau,” Li Changqing replied calmly. “She even threatened to spread rumors that I’m a demon, or something like that—just a bunch of threats.”
“You agreed?” Li Minghao couldn’t help asking.
Li Changqing replied, “That little girl is still too green compared to me. She doesn’t know what a double agent is. I’ve already managed to get some information out of her—a major demon will be landing at Linjiang Dock the night after tomorrow…”
Neither the Thirty-Sixth Bureau nor Shen Qingdai could be trusted, but neither could be offended.
Li Minghao’s eyes lit up. “Nicely done! If it’s a major demon, and we capture him, we might finally get the information we’re after.”
As they drove off, Li Changqing’s heart grew heavier.
He had to find a way to get rid of Shen Qingdai. She was indeed a deadly threat. If she ever revealed the truth, would he be able to escape the Thirty-Sixth Bureau’s pursuit? With the Bureau backed by the Federation, could he really get away?
With his own strength, taking down Shen Qingdai was a pipe dream—he’d need the Thirty-Sixth Bureau.
But if the Bureau was to eliminate Shen Qingdai, he had to make sure she couldn’t reveal his identity as a zombie before her death.
What a dilemma.
