Night gradually descended.

Yet Zhang Xun’er could not fall asleep. She remained consumed by worry.

By now, the First Bureau must have discovered that she had escaped and was probably searching for her everywhere.

As for Shen Yan—

The mere fact that Shen Yan had secretly investigated the whereabouts of Huang Deshui and Liu Shuqin without telling her was enough for Zhang Xun’er to know that she could no longer return.

Shen Yan was ruthless. She herself was not afraid of having offended him, but she feared for the safety of the two elderly people.

“I’ll leave first thing tomorrow morning.”

Just as Zhang Xun’er was about to go to sleep, she suddenly sat up in bed. Her eyes turned cold as she looked down through the window at the street below.

Two people who appeared to be in their twenties were pacing back and forth downstairs.

They were two minor demons, and they could not even conceal their demonic aura properly.

Nevertheless, Zhang Xun’er grew wary. She rose silently, left the room, and quickly made her way downstairs.

The two minor demons seemed to be searching for someone. The moment they saw Zhang Xun’er, their spirits lifted.

“We found Zhang Xun’er!” one of them exclaimed excitedly. He hurriedly said to the other, “Notify Lord Shen at once.”

“Hold it.”

Zhang Xun’er rushed forward, snatched the phone from the demon’s hand, threw it to the ground, and crushed it beneath her foot.

“What are you trying to do?” A hostile glint appeared in Zhang Xun’er’s eyes. Behind her back, her fingernails slowly lengthened into sharp claws as she moved closer to the two demons.

The two demons exchanged a frightened glance.

One of them stammered, “L-Lord Shen ordered us to search for you after you disappeared.”

“And—and he suspects that you betrayed him. The moment we found you, we were to notify him…”

As soon as they finished speaking, the two demons turned and tried to flee.

They had not been lying entirely. Shen Yan had indeed ordered his many subordinates to search for Zhang Xun’er.

Unfortunately for them, while searching for her, they had been captured by people from the First Bureau.

Unlike Zhang Xun’er, the two demons were not particularly tough. After the First Bureau promised to spare their lives, they had immediately switched sides.

But they had taken only a few steps when two enormous fox tails came rushing toward them and instantly ensnared them.

The fox tails possessed tremendous strength. In an instant, every bone in their bodies was crushed.

The two demons reverted to their true forms—

one a weasel, the other a black snake.

A cold glint flashed through Zhang Xun’er’s eyes.

“Shen Yan, don’t push me too far.”

She could not remain here any longer.

Zhang Xun’er hurried upstairs and woke Huang Deshui and Liu Shuqin.

“Dad, Mom, something unexpected has happened. We have to leave tonight,” she said.

Although the two elderly people had no idea what had happened, they naturally had no reason to doubt Zhang Xun’er.

Holding the blind Liu Shuqin’s hand with one hand and supporting the lame Huang Deshui with the other, Zhang Xun’er led them downstairs.

But as soon as they reached the stairwell, she saw someone standing outside.

Li Changqing.

“Officer Li, what are you doing here?” Zhang Xun’er’s brows drew tightly together. She had no idea why Li Changqing had appeared at this particular moment.

A trace of caution surfaced in her heart.

Li Changqing was clearly surprised as well. He had not expected Zhang Xun’er to be supporting two elderly people.

He had come to confront Zhang Xun’er openly. Now that she knew Shen Yan was after her, he intended to reveal his identity as a member of the First Bureau and persuade her to cooperate with them against Shen Yan.

“Who are these two elderly people?” Li Changqing asked.

Not knowing what he intended, Zhang Xun’er quickly stepped in front of the old couple.

“If you have something to say, say it.”

Li Changqing could see that the two elderly people were very important to her.

He smiled and said, “Hu Xiong, Bai Chuan, don’t just stand there. Go over and help support the elderly couple.”

Hu Xiong and Bai Chuan emerged from the side and walked toward them.

“What are you trying to do?” Zhang Xun’er grew anxious. She recognized Hu Xiong as the taxi driver who had driven her home earlier that day.

Worry also appeared on Huang Deshui’s face.

“Don’t worry, old man. We’re with the Federal Police Bureau.” Hu Xiong cheerfully produced an identification card. “We’re the good guys.”

“Don’t worry, dear. They’re from the Federal Police Bureau.” Huang Deshui took the identification card and glanced at it, finally relaxing.

Zhang Xun’er’s expression, however, darkened completely.

Only after the two elderly people had been taken out of the stairwell did Li Changqing walk up to Zhang Xun’er and ask curiously, “What is your relationship with those two elderly people?”

“What business is that of yours?” Zhang Xun’er clearly had no intention of cooperating.

Li Changqing shrugged.

At that moment, outside the stairwell, Hu Xiong cheerfully handed Huang Deshui a cigarette and asked loudly, “Old man, what is your relationship with that young woman just now?”

“She’s my daughter.”

“Oh, what a coincidence. Your daughter helped our Federal Police Bureau some time ago. We came here to express our thanks, and we’ll even bring over a commendation banner later.”

Huang Deshui had been an honest man all his life. Naturally, he believed what the federal police told him.

“She’s your daughter?” Li Changqing smiled faintly. “Looks like even if you refuse to say anything, they can still get the answer from the old man.”

“You’re from the Federal Police Bureau? No—you’re from the First Bureau. You deliberately let me out?” Zhang Xun’er stared at Li Changqing through clenched teeth.

Li Changqing rubbed his nose.

“Cooperate with me, and I’ll guarantee your safety. I keep my word.”

“How am I supposed to believe you?” Zhang Xun’er gritted her teeth slightly.

“Shen Qingdai is on her way here. You know her, don’t you?” Li Changqing said calmly. “She can vouch for me.”

“Shen Yan is searching the entire world for you and intends to kill you. Even if you aren’t afraid of dying, what about those two elderly people? I can see how fiercely you protect them. Aren’t you worried that Shen Yan will harm them?”

Zhang Xun’er immediately understood. She narrowed her eyes.

“You deliberately let me out so that those two demons could ‘leak’ the news that Shen Yan wanted to kill me—and then use it to threaten me?”

“Were those two demons planted by you as well?”

The fact that Zhang Xun’er had been able to help Shen Yan manage his unfinished demons meant that she was no ordinary woman.

She saw through such a trick almost at once.

“Does it matter?” Li Changqing took out his phone and opened a recording. On the screen was footage of Zhang Xun’er killing the two demons.

“Even if the demons were planted by us, they were still Shen Yan’s subordinates,” Li Changqing said with a smile. “You did, in fact, kill his people.”

“You…” Zhang Xun’er froze, staring at Li Changqing in disbelief.

“Come with me to the First Bureau. We’ll bring your parents back with us and protect them as well.”

Zhang Xun’er replied coldly, with a hint of displeasure, “Do people from the Strange Investigation Bureau resort to threats like this too?”
