Chapter Twenty-Two: Are You Playing the Useless Son-in-Law Here?
As the luxury car came to a halt, the gold-digger’s eyes sparkled with excitement. Her reaction was much like that of the naive girl when she first saw this top-tier car; she instinctively believed it must cost at least a million or two. Glancing at her boyfriend—no, her ex-boyfriend now—standing beside her in his shabby clothes, she found him even more unbearable under the glaring contrast of the luxury vehicle.
Just then, the young man who had been pleading with her moments ago flushed red, took a deep breath as if making an important decision, and tugged at her sleeve once more.
“My dear, for the sake of our three years together, give me one last chance. Tomorrow, I’ll bring half a million to your family.”
“It’s too late!” she replied coldly. “Do you take me for a fool? If you really had it, you’d have already shown it. Why wait till now? Even if you had another month, you couldn’t come up with that money. I think it’s best we end this.”
Her cutting words left him rooted to the spot, as though he couldn’t help but endure her scorn. He had agreed to her terms, yet she remained unmoved—clearly, his affections were wasted.
The onlookers, watching the drama unfold, were incensed—not at the woman’s ruthlessness, but at the man’s pathetic persistence.
“No wonder she broke up with you. You deserve it for being such a hopeless simp.”
“She’s made herself clear, and he’s still wallowing in self-pity?”
“If my son turned out like this, I’d strangle him myself.”
“Pitiful people often have only themselves to blame.”
The crowd was itching to give the young man a wake-up call. The whole scene was more infuriating than anything on TV.
Meanwhile, inside the car, Bai Qingming was plotting with the naive girl.
“When I open the door in a moment, I’ll give that woman a good kick. You start the car right away!” Bai Qingming instructed.
“What?” the girl was bewildered.
“Why are you spacing out?” Bai Qingming sighed. “I can’t stand that gold-digger either and want to do something about it. But we’re people of some standing. I don’t care much, but you’ve got over ten million followers. If this gets out, you’ll be trending on social media.”
“You don’t want to trend, do you?” She shook her head.
“Exactly. So after I kick her, we make a quick getaway. It’s just to blow off some steam,” Bai said seriously, not joking in the least.
“Wow, people actually do this?”
“Singlehood’s godfather indeed lives up to his name. As a city enforcer from Guangdong, I salute you.”
“Honestly, it sounds a bit shady, but it’s more satisfying than lecturing her. It’s even a little thrilling.”
“Do it! I support you!”
The livestream chat was abuzz, viewers cheering them on.
At the same time, the young man hung his head, lost in thought. Suddenly, as if struck by inspiration, his demeanor changed entirely.
He looked the gold-digger in the eye and spoke calmly:
“At this point, I might as well be honest. I’m actually the son of a wealthy family. From the moment I met you, everything was a test arranged by my family. You’ve disappointed me and failed the test, missing your chance to marry into wealth.”
With that, he strode to the other side of the car and opened the passenger door.
Just then, Bai Qingming was about to step out when the door swung open. Their eyes met in surprise. The young man clearly hadn’t expected anyone to be there. Bai Qingming froze as well.
But the young man gritted his teeth, squeezed into the car, and sat right on Bai Qingming’s lap.
The door slammed shut.
Thankfully, the Bugatti’s tinted windows kept the scene hidden; otherwise, it would have been mortifying.
In an instant, Bai Qingming understood—the kid was trying to show off.
The livestream viewers watched it all unfold, flooding the chat with praise for the young man’s bravado.
On the street, the crowd was dumbfounded.
What on earth was happening? Was this a scene from a novel? Were they filming a short video? The prodigal son returns? The Dragon King revealed? The war god comes home?
Who would believe that such a hopeless simp was really a rich heir? Anyone who heard it would want to slap the speaker.
The gold-digger was stunned as well. She had dated him for three years, since college; she knew his family’s circumstances inside and out. Suddenly, he claimed to be wealthy—it was impossible.
But the reality was, he had driven off in a Bugatti.
It made no sense.
Coming to her senses, she ran over and started banging frantically on the car window.
“My love, I was just kidding earlier—I really do like you…”
Inside, Bai Qingming kindly chose not to expose the young man’s lie. After all, who hasn’t wanted to show off in their youth? He let him have his moment—consider it a good deed.
But since they were doing a good deed, they might as well see it through.
“Drive. Let’s go!” Bai Qingming commanded.
The Bugatti roared to life and soon vanished down the street.
Moments later, a Rolls-Royce pulled up where they had been parked. An elderly man sat in the passenger seat.
“Where is the young master?” he asked, bewildered, glancing around before hastily calling someone.
“Sir, the three years are up… but the young master is missing!”
The naive girl kept driving, not stopping for ten blocks. Finally, she pulled over. The young man got out without so much as a thank you. To their surprise, he got into the back seat instead.
“Let’s go,” he said.
Bai Qingming and the girl were speechless.
“What are you waiting for? Aren’t you taking me home?” the young man asked, his expression tinged with melancholy, a hint of nonchalance, as though weighed down by fate. “After all, my three-year trial is over.”
The two were even more bewildered.
“Bro, are you a little too deep in the role? Are you acting out a live-in son-in-law drama?”
“Huh? Aren’t you the ones my father sent to take me home?” the young man hesitated.
Bai Qingming was at a loss for words.
The viewers in the livestream were laughing uproariously.
“Who would’ve thought? Not only is this guy a simp, he’s a born actor.”
“Honestly, he’s got the vibe of that crooked-mouthed Dragon King.”
“Maybe he’s been pushed over the edge? Streamer, you’d better get out of here before his family latches onto you.”
Seeing the chat, Bai Qingming couldn’t help but laugh.
He looked back at the young man in the rear seat and said,
“Buddy, I believe you’re a rich heir, but there’s something that’s been bothering me for a long time. Can I ask you something?”
“What is it?” the young man asked curiously.
“Well, just a question, don’t take it the wrong way. I just want to know—do all rich heirs have some special hobby or quirk?”
“For example… do you especially like acting like a hopeless simp?”
