Chapter Ninety-Eight: Could There Really Be Such a Good Thing?
In the hallway, Old Wang stamped his feet.
The voice-activated light did not come on.
“Damn, broken again!”
Muttering to himself, Old Wang walked up to the elevator.
He pressed the button, and the elevator began to rise.
While waiting, he was whistling, and at the same time he was livestreaming on his phone.
“Brother Wang, stop whistling. You’re making me want to pee.”
“Whistling in the middle of the night? Aren’t you afraid of seeing ghosts?”
“Can whistling really make you see ghosts? I’m a coward, don’t scare me.”
“Seriously, I once had a friend who was walking down the road at midnight, whistling as he went, and then he ran into a ghost. He said the ghost looked terrifying. The moment it opened its mouth, it said to him, ‘How are you?’”
“Damn, a foreign ghost!”
“What’s that worth? I’ve got a video here of a bunch of men fighting a foreign ghost lady on a bed. It was fierce as hell, their clothes got torn right off, and in the end the foreign ghost woman couldn’t take it and was howling in defeat.”
“Above me, I don’t believe you’ve got that kind of thing unless you send it to prove it.”
“That stuff is too deep. You can’t handle it. Send it to me; my grandpa’s a Taoist priest. I’ll let him handle it.”
“Yeah, yeah, don’t just talk. Post it so we can all appreciate it.”
“I want it too!”
The viewers kept firing off comments, the pace so fast even the most seasoned chatterbox could barely keep up.
Ding.
The elevator doors slowly opened.
Old Wang glanced at the scrolling comments on his phone and walked in with his head down, casually pressing the button for the first floor.
It had to be said, these viewers were all real talents, and educated ones at that.
Old Wang liked the way they talked: simple, blunt, and open-handed. If someone had something good, they did not hide it away; they shared it with everyone else.
Ever since becoming a streamer, Old Wang had picked up plenty of good stuff. The things circulating online these days, he basically had all of them himself now—collector’s editions, restricted content, all of it. It had opened his eyes. He felt like he had lived all these years for nothing, like some bumpkin who only knew a few positions and had only ever watched censored videos.
He casually snapped a screenshot of the chat, where someone supposedly posted a cloud-drive download link for the so-called foreign ghost battle, and felt pleased with himself.
Another freebie. He would save it for later, after he finished watching the things he had already stored up, so he could keep something to look forward to.
That was how it went.
From start to finish, Old Wang’s attention had been entirely on his phone, and he had not noticed that there was anyone else in the elevator with him.
Then one viewer noticed something and warned him:
“Old Wang, I think there’s someone behind you.”
Immediately, more viewers spotted it too.
“Hey, there really is. Looks like a woman.”
“Oh? She’s kind of pretty, but the way she’s dressed... why does it feel a little creepy?”
“Holy hell, is that a ghost? Old Wang, run!”
Seeing that message, Old Wang laughed.
“Trying to scare me? That trick is way too old-fashioned.”
He did not take it seriously.
“We’re not lying! There really is a female ghost standing behind you!”
“Run!”
“Run where? What am I supposed to run to?”
“Accidentally clicked in. If I’ve offended you, please forgive me!”
“Excuse me!”
For a moment, Jiajia felt extremely awkward.
Especially since there were so many people in her livestream watching, making her look foolish.
So Jiajia could not hold back anymore. She coughed lightly a couple of times, trying to get Old Wang’s attention.
The trick worked. Hearing the cough, Old Wang suddenly turned around.
The moment he saw the woman’s outfit behind him, his scalp went numb, and two words blurted out of his mouth.
“Holy shit!”
When people are frightened, that is the truest reaction of all.
Seeing Old Wang’s reaction, Jiajia was very satisfied.
Striking while the iron was hot, she used a chilling voice to deliver the line she had prepared long ago.
“You can see me?”
...
The moment those words landed, Old Wang’s livestream exploded.
“Mom, there really are ghosts in this world!”
“It’s over. Brother Wang is probably done for!”
[Sold cucumbers outside the girls’ dormitory and got rich overnight sent Treasure Map x1]
“A little Treasure Map, nothing much. If I don’t send it now, I’m afraid I won’t get another chance later.”
“Didn’t someone just say his grandpa was a Taoist priest? Ask him what to do in this situation.”
“Just toss it together and serve it cold!”
...
At that moment.
Inside the cramped elevator, the atmosphere turned heavy.
Old Wang stood frozen in place.
Jiajia’s streaming phone was hidden by her sleeve, so it could not be seen from the outside.
Subconsciously, Old Wang also thought he had run into a ghost.
Seeing his reaction, the viewers in Jiajia’s livestream became inexplicably excited too.
“Look how scared that guy is. He’s gone speechless.”
“I waited all night, and you did not disappoint.”
“This one’s no good. He didn’t even wet himself. Bad review.”
“That’s enough, guys. Don’t scare the poor man any worse.”
Seeing someone unlucky enough to be frightened, the viewers were having a blast.
But then, just at that moment, Old Wang suddenly came back to himself and gave a couple of snickers.
He smiled.
In an instant, both Old Wang’s viewers and Jiajia’s viewers were completely stunned.
“Did this guy get scared into having a breakdown?”
“Damn, damn, streamer, you’ve got trouble. You scared someone stupid.”
To be fair, even Jiajia was startled.
She had pulled this kind of prank many times before, and this was the first time she had encountered a reaction like this.
Just as Jiajia was about to say something, Old Wang spoke first.
“Does something like this actually happen to me?”
“????”
In a flash, Jiajia’s chat was filled with question marks.
No one understood what Old Wang meant, only heard him muttering to himself: “I’ve never tried doing that with a female ghost before. Today I finally get the chance!”
Looking at the “female ghost” in front of him, Old Wang swallowed, his eyes gleaming. He immediately started taking off his shirt.
At that moment, all the viewers were utterly stunned.
Old Wang’s livestream chat went crazy.
“This works too?”
“What the hell, Old Wang, your imagination is way too wild!”
“Damn, Brother Wang is bold. Why didn’t I think of that? It’s just a female ghost—what’s there to be afraid of?”
“As long as you’ve got the guts, even a female ghost has to take maternity leave!”
“Modern Nie Xiaoqian? My Brother Wang deserves the title!”
“So exciting. Is Brother Wang going to livestream banging a ghost? Waiting online.”
“The first man on the entire internet to livestream banging a ghost. Minors under eighteen, please watch with a parent present.”
“You beast, let go of that beautiful ghost lady. It’s dangerous here, let me do it!”
“Who knows which neighborhood this elevator is in? Nothing special, I just want to go have a look.”
“Brother Wang, please send the address. Can I be next?”
The viewers were full of filthy jokes, and the atmosphere immediately felt far less frightening.
Jiajia, standing nearby, was a mess.
This man was simply insane—he had the nerve to disrespect a ghost like that.
Was that even human behavior?
It was just ridiculous.
The elevator slowly descended.
Seeing that the man in front of her had already started taking off his clothes, and that there was nowhere to run even if she wanted to, Jiajia panicked.
She was panicking hard and hurriedly began to explain:
“Big brother, big brother, I was wrong. Listen to me...”
