Chapter Thirteen: Hired

Elsewhere, a heated argument erupted at Susan’s home.
“Dad, just make a phone call and ask—how is my classmate doing?” Susan pleaded, hoping her father would use his connections to find out what was going on.
“No!” Upon learning that the person arrested was Ye Feng, Susan’s father refused outright to help and sternly ordered his daughter to sever all ties with that boy.
Years ago, after the car accident, Susan had once asked her father to help investigate the truth. Thus, he retained a certain impression of this Ye Feng.
“He’s a worthless thug with a prison record. Why would you want to keep in touch with him? He got himself arrested; he deserves it!” her father snapped.
“Some habits never die. Just out of prison and already involved in a fight! And it was with the son of Magistrate Xie? The audacity! Does he still think he’s the lawless young master of the Ye family?” Susan’s mother chimed in.
“Susan, I’m not trying to scold you, but tonight you’re supposed to focus on your matchmaking date, and you’re helping that classmate of yours beat up Magistrate Xie’s son? Is that reasonable?”
“Your father works under Magistrate Xie. After this incident, how are you supposed to face him? This isn’t just an accident—it’s making enemies! You could become a target!”
Susan’s father was just a low-ranking clerk, a minor official, while Magistrate Xie held a respectable ninth-rank government position.
Even the smallest official outranked a clerk.
“Sigh, if they want to target me, it’s no big deal,” her father sighed heavily. “But because of this mess, Susan, forget about that job opportunity.”
“Magistrate Xie’s son is the manager of the HR department at Zhao Group’s headquarters. We were hoping this matchmaking event would at least get you two acquainted. Even if the marriage fell through, you could leverage that connection to get into a big company like Zhao Group.”
“Now that you’ve offended him, don’t even think about Zhao Group. Just one phone call from him, and no major company in Yanjing will touch you.”
Mentioning work, Susan couldn’t help but retort.
“Ye Feng has already arranged my job.”
“Coincidentally, he knows Miss Zhao Wanting from the Zhao family. Miss Zhao personally told me to report to their company tomorrow…”
However, later Ye Feng said something that offended the Zhao family, so it was uncertain if that promise would still hold.
As Susan spoke, her voice grew less confident.
Her parents’ eyes showed plainly that they thought she was lying.
“Hah! If you’re going to defend that boy, at least come up with a better excuse. He can barely keep himself safe, and you say he arranged a job for you?” her father sneered.
“Exactly. Knows the Zhao family’s young lady? Might as well say he knows the patriarch of the Zhao family! Then maybe you’d replace Young Master Xie as the HR manager!” her mother shook her head with a bitter smile.
Susan thought to herself: The Zhao patriarch really does know him—he even toasted Ye Feng tonight.

But telling the truth like that wouldn’t convince anyone.
Susan changed the subject and pleaded again, “Dad, just make a call. They might start interrogating soon. Please help plead for leniency!”
“Don’t even think about it!” her father said with disgust. “People like him are better off cut off sooner rather than later. How could I plead for him?”
“If you won’t call, then I’ll go see for myself!” Susan said defiantly.
“You dare?” her father roared. “If you step out that door, I’ll break your legs!”
Just then, the doorbell rang.
Susan’s mother opened it and found an urgent delivery.
“Strange, who sends a package this late?”
Opening the package, the three of them were stunned.
It was a job offer, complete with a uniform and an ID badge.
Susan’s father opened the letter and was utterly shocked.
“A job offer from Zhao Group headquarters?”
“The position is... HR manager!!!”
“Impossible!” Susan’s mother couldn’t believe it. “Isn’t that position Young Master Xie’s? Is this some kind of prank?”
Her father shook his head. “It has the Zhao Group’s official seal. How could it be fake? Who would dare forge that? That’s a crime.”
Then both parents looked at their daughter, disbelief mingled with reluctant acceptance.
“Susan, you… really got hired by Zhao Group?”
Susan smiled knowingly at the offer letter.
“I told you, it was through Ye Feng’s connection. I’ve been granted an exception and hired by Zhao Group, but you wouldn’t believe me.”
Her parents were left speechless.
“If that boy really helped…” her father finally relented, “I’ll make a call and check on his situation.”
He then made a phone call and learned that Ye Feng had already been taken away by someone else.
Only then did Susan relax.
“Strange…” She tried calling Ye Feng to thank him, “but his phone is unreachable.”

At the foot of Fenghua Mountain.
The Golden Thread robe had failed to capture Ye Feng and returned to the villa district to seek out their sworn father.
“Huh? What’s that!?”
Golden Thread robe caught sight of a familiar figure flashing briefly on a villa halfway up the mountain before entering.
“Ye Feng? How could it be him?”
“How is he at Yunshang Fenghua?”
Golden Thread robe steadied himself and chuckled bitterly, “My mind’s so focused on catching him that I see him everywhere. I must be overthinking.”
He then entered a villa at the mountain’s base.
“Sworn Father!”
In the backyard, Golden Thread robe found the elderly man practicing martial arts.
“Still training so late?”
The man, grizzled with a beard and in his sixties, struck powerful punches and kicks with the vigor of someone thirty years younger.
This was the War God of Youzhou, one of the Nine Provinces of Great Xia.
“Hmph... I’m getting old. My limbs aren’t as agile. If I don’t keep at it, you young ones will surpass me...” The old man smiled after retracting his fists.
Years ago, after a car accident left Golden Thread robe an orphan, this man took her in as his sworn daughter, teaching her many skills that changed her life’s course.
“So late at night, what brings you here?” The old man asked bluntly as they sat in the living room.
“Sworn Father, look at this.” Golden Thread robe produced an object.
It was a diamond the size of a grape seed.
“Did you see today’s news? A car plunged off a cliff. I happened to pass by and found this inside. The same kind of diamond was also found on the car that killed my mother years ago!”
