Chapter 10: Not to be Rushed
Chen Fan paused.
Was the quality of Fu Xueyue’s words really that good? He had wiped it several times, yet he couldn't get it clean?
"Ms. Jiang, this has nothing to do with you, does it? After all, we have both signed the divorce agreement," Chen Fan said calmly.
Jiang Xiao stared at Chen Fan with an expression of agitation, her face turning pale with anger.
"Fine. Since the divorce agreement is signed, do you think I don't know what you’re thinking? You believe that by relying on President Fu, you can make me look at you with new eyes and force me to pester you? If this is your scheme to make me change my mind, then I’m sorry—you’re just dreaming!"
This remark amused Chen Fan. He looked at Jiang Xiao, wondering how he had never noticed before that she was so thick-skinned. In her eyes, he was someone who had to revolve around her. And what had she imagined? A tragic drama of unrequited love?
"Why are you looking at me? Do you really think I’ll regret this?" Jiang Xiao huffed and headed toward the Civil Affairs Bureau first.
When the two emerged later, Chen Fan took a deep breath. This contract, which had been breached, was only truly terminated the moment he held the divorce certificate.
Jiang Xiao was holding her divorce certificate and had initially been quite pleased, but seeing the look of relief on Chen Fan’s face, she was suddenly annoyed. In her mind, the ideal script for a divorce or a breakup involved the other person being unable to let her go, begging her desperately, only to be rejected by her. But Chen Fan’s current demeanor suggested that being rid of her was a good thing. She had clearly gotten rid of him—which was her stroke of luck—so why couldn't she be happy?
"Chen Fan..."
Before Jiang Xiao could finish, Chen Fan interrupted her.
"Ms. Jiang, goodbye." Chen Fan nodded slightly and raised his hand to hail a taxi. The more calmly one faced these things, the faster one could detach from a relationship.
"Chen Fan! You will absolutely come crawling back to me one day!"
Jiang Xiao stomped her foot in anger. She got into her car and set her navigation for the Qingcheng First Hospital.
***
At the First Hospital, inside a VIP ward, Zhang Qiankun was pacing back and forth in distress. His son, Zhang Qiusheng, sat nearby with his head bowed, saying nothing. His daughter-in-law, Song Shuqiao, leaned against the hospital bed, sobbing uncontrollably as she looked at Zhang Chen, who lay unconscious and gaunt.
"Master Zhang..." Jiang Yueshan pushed the door open, but before he could speak, Zhang Qiusheng stood up, his eyes blazing with fury.
"Get out! Stand outside! Who allowed you to enter?" Zhang Qiusheng barked. "If anything happens to my son, I will have your Jiang family buried with him!"
Jiang Yueshan gave a sheepish nod and immediately closed the door.
Su Juan rubbed her hands nervously. "What are we going to do?"
"If you ask me, how would I know?" Jiang Yueshan cursed under his breath. He could not understand it. The feng shui of the Jiang household had been stable for so long; there should not have been any problems. But how could Zhang Chen have been backlashed so severely? It must be that Zhang Chen was unskilled and was blaming them instead!
Just as Jiang Yueshan was thinking this, he saw Chen Fan walking over from the elevator.
"How dare you show your face in front of me?!" Jiang Yueshan snapped.
Chen Fan’s expression was indifferent. Since the Jiang family was at the ward door, it confirmed his suspicion: Zhang Qiankun’s grandson was indeed the young man in the Taoist robe he had encountered at the Jiang house last night.
"Get lost," Chen Fan said calmly.
"What did you say?!" Jiang Yueshan and Su Juan both exclaimed, their eyes wide with shock.
"What are you bickering about? Is this a place for you to be arguing?" Zhang Qiusheng pushed the door open, his anger undiminished.
"Mr. Zhang, I’m so sorry!" Jiang Yueshan apologized repeatedly. "This fellow is just a live-in son-in-law I kicked out of the Jiang family, and he keeps pestering us!"
Zhang Qiusheng glanced at Chen Fan and frowned. "Then hurry up and chase him away. Don't disturb the peace."
"Did you hear that? Get out of here!" Su Juan scolded.
Ignoring them completely, Chen Fan said coolly, "Your father asked me to come."
"What?" Zhang Qiusheng paused.
"What nonsense are you spouting!" Jiang Yueshan was trembling with rage. "Is it not enough that you’ve harmed the Jiang family? It must have been because of you yesterday that the young Master Zhang suffered a backlash!"
Su Juan moved to slap Chen Fan’s face, but without a moment’s hesitation, Chen Fan grabbed her wrist and slapped her across the face with his other hand. He didn't use much force, fearing that a full-strength strike might send her straight to her funeral.
*Slap!*
The crisp, clean sound left a handprint on Su Juan’s face.
"You? You dare hit me?!" Su Juan’s eyes widened in shock.
"Chen Fan, have you lost your mind?!" Jiang Yueshan’s fingers trembled as he pointed at him.
Zhang Qiusheng had wanted to say something, but in the end, he just shook his head. Jiang Xiao, who was walking over quickly, saw the scene and was struck with fury.
"Chen Fan! What are you doing?! Because you couldn't have me, you dare hit my mother?"
Chen Fan frowned. He had no intention of explaining himself. He simply said to Zhang Qiusheng, who was blocking the door, "If you don't let me in, I’m leaving."
A sneer curled the corner of Zhang Qiusheng’s mouth. He understood now: the Chen Fan before him was just a discarded son-in-law pestering the Jiang family. And now he was demanding that he, Zhang Qiusheng, move aside? It was laughable! No wonder the Jiang family’s feng shui was so poor—bad feng shui harms people, and bad people ruin feng shui; they complemented each other perfectly.
Seeing that Zhang Qiusheng remained silent, Chen Fan gave a light chuckle.
"Fine. Tell Zhang Qiankun I’m leaving."
With that, Chen Fan turned and walked away.
"Get lost! The further you go, the better!" Su Juan shrieked.
"Shut up and be quiet," Zhang Qiusheng growled. He turned, walked into the ward, and closed the door. He looked at the anxious Zhang Qiankun and couldn't help but ask, "Dad, how much longer until the senior you mentioned arrives?"
Zhang Qiankun shook his head. "We cannot rush him, we cannot rush him. My master told me he had matters to attend to this morning. He will come once he has finished his business." He paused, then asked, "By the way, what was the commotion with the Jiang family at the door?"
Zhang Qiusheng shook his head slightly. "Just that discarded son-in-law of the Jiang family making trouble."
"What!" Zhang Qiankun stood up excitedly. "Where is he?!"
