Chapter Thirteen: A Twist of Fate

“Hmph, what’s the matter that you’re so flustered? It’s not like the sky is falling.” A young servant from the Wang Mansion burst hurriedly into the main hall. There were already guests present, and upon seeing this, Wang Lang’s expression naturally soured.
But he quickly composed himself and asked, “Chief Dao, what’s going on? Wasn’t he leading a few experts to the Beast Mountains?”
“M-Master, I don’t know what happened either. Chief Dao is right outside the gate now, unable to move and barely clinging to life...” The servant lowered his head, trembling all over.
Wang Lang’s brows furrowed deeply upon hearing this.
He then turned to the elder from the Moonwatch Sect with a forced smile. “Elder Bi, please rest for now. I shall host a welcome banquet for you this evening. I have urgent family matters to attend to—please forgive me.”
“Master Wang, you are too polite. Since there are pressing matters at your residence, I shall not keep you,” Elder Bi replied with a slight smile.
“Yiyi, please take Elder Bi to rest.”
“All right.”
With that, Wang Lang’s face darkened as he stepped out of the hall.
Before Wang Lang had even reached outside the mansion, murmurs from the gathered townsfolk reached his ears.
“Tsk tsk, isn’t that Chief Dao from the Wang Mansion? How did he end up like that...?”
“Who knows? Judging by his state, he probably won’t live long.”
“Chief Dao is a fully accomplished practitioner of the Third Profound Realm and a formidable figure in Ye Bei City. Who could have injured him so badly?”
“...God only knows. Whoever dared to provoke the Wang Mansion at such a critical moment must not be an ordinary person.”
“.....”
Wang Lang’s expression darkened further.
At this moment, he wondered if it was his own subordinates who had encountered a vicious beast and been overwhelmed, suffering a crushing defeat. He hadn’t considered the possibility that another power within Ye Bei City might be responsible.
When Wang Lang stepped outside and saw Chief Dao lying on the ground, barely breathing, his expression turned chillingly cold.
As a Divine Martial Realm expert, he could tell at a glance that Chief Dao’s wounds were not caused by a beast. Beasts differ from humans; whenever they strike, they leave traces, even their aura. But Chief Dao’s body bore no trace of beastly aura. Instead... there was a battle intent that made even Wang Lang’s heart race.
“Hurry and carry him inside,” Wang Lang ordered, then turned away abruptly.

The servants immediately sprang into action. The young servant who had earlier greeted the guests respectfully addressed the crowd: “Fellow villagers, thank you all for coming to offer congratulations. Please disperse now, and rest assured the Wang Mansion will express its gratitude in due time.”
Without waiting for their reaction, he closed the grand gates.
Soon, Chief Dao was carried into a private chamber.
Only Wang Lang remained inside, observing his subordinate. He circulated his spiritual energy through his body, pressing several acupuncture points on Chief Dao, then fed him a pill.
The once unconscious Chief Dao slowly opened his eyes.
Seeing this, Wang Lang hurriedly asked, “Who did this to you?”
Though Wang Lang had just extended Chief Dao’s life by a breath, his internal organs, meridians, and all energy channels had been shattered by Su Yang’s overwhelming power. Even Wang Lang was powerless to save him.
Chief Dao’s terrified eyes widened as he tried to speak faintly.
Wang Lang leaned in closer to listen.
“Master... b-be... c-careful... Su... Su...” The words barely escaped before Chief Dao collapsed and died.
He had used forbidden techniques to hold on this long. At the time, the Purple Thunder Savage Lion was nearby, driving off many beasts, allowing Chief Dao to stagger back to the mansion’s gate.
That he could still utter a few words now was already a desperate last effort.
“Su? Su what?!” Wang Lang was frantic. This man could have died at any moment, but at least finish your sentence!
Instead, he only managed to say “Be careful of Su...” before passing away.
Could it be that he was warning me to beware of the Su family?
Wang Lang’s face darkened.
Could it be that Su Beilou, knowing I was going to move against the Su family and aware that I had sent Chief Dao and others to the Beast Mountains, had deliberately dispatched experts to ambush them?
Damn it! Damn Su Beilou!
If that were true, Wang Lang vowed to make the Su family pay in blood!
He had already harbored intentions to annihilate the Su family; now he had a perfect excuse to escalate matters. The Su family would either submit entirely or be wiped out without a trace.
At that moment, Wang Yiyi entered the room.
Seeing Chief Dao already dead, her cold face furrowed with concern. “Father, what happened here?”

Wang Lang relaxed slightly upon seeing his youngest daughter and replied with a grim tone, “Hmph, the Su family actually dared to strike first at our Wang Mansion. Has Su Beilou forgotten just how powerful we are?”
“The Su family? Are you saying Chief Dao was injured by them?” Wang Yiyi sounded doubtful.
“Yes. Just before he died, Chief Dao told me to be careful of ‘Su... something.’ Though he didn’t finish the last word, it’s obvious he meant the Su family,” Wang Lang said firmly.
Wang Yiyi fell silent upon hearing this.
Looking at the deceased Chief Dao, a bad premonition stirred within her.
“Su... could it be him? No, that’s impossible! Even if he hadn’t died at the time, there’s no way he could have recovered in just three months, let alone defeat a fully accomplished Third Profound Realm expert like Chief Dao.”
“It seems, as Father said, this must have been orchestrated by the Su family behind the scenes.”
“But... is that really the case?”
Wang Yiyi felt uneasy but couldn’t speculate further.
“Hmph, we’ll settle this score soon enough. In three days, once your betrothal to the Third Prince is finalized, it will be time to demand retribution from the Su family.”
“Yiyi, the Third Prince is a fine person with extraordinary constitution. He is said to be a strong contender for the crown prince title. Although you possess dual bloodlines and have the favor of the Moonwatch Sect leader, it would be best for your future if you marry into the Great Xia Imperial Court.”
“What do you think?” Wang Lang asked gently.
After a moment’s silence, Wang Yiyi lifted her head and said, “Father, I do not wish to marry into the royal family so soon. Although the Third Prince is indeed impressive, my future achievements will surpass his. When that day comes, even the Great Xia Imperial Court will not dare lay a finger on the Wang family.”
“Please understand my decision.”
Wang Yiyi met Wang Lang’s gaze with unwavering resolve.
Wang Lang seemed to have anticipated her response and sighed. “Very well, if that is your wish, then delay the marriage for now. When the time comes, Elder Bi and I will accompany you to meet the Third Prince and explain the situation. I’m sure the Emperor of Xia will not trouble us.”
“Let it be decided then. For now, focus on your recovery. Once these matters are settled, you shall spread your wings and soar high!”
