Chapter Eleven: The First Gig

As soon as the afternoon shift began, Zhang Fan prepared the disinfectant materials and went to change Bayin’s dressing. Pushing the door open, he found Batu there as well. “Hello, Director,” Zhang Fan greeted without much ado, placing the supplies by Bayin’s feet.

“I’m just here to watch, you change your dressing, don’t worry about me,” Batu said, not wanting to disturb Zhang Fan.

“Alright, Bayin, I’m going to change your dressing now. The wound might be scabbing over and could hurt a bit. Just bear with it,” Zhang Fan reassured him. Whether the director was present or not made no difference to Zhang Fan; ever since acquiring the system, all medical procedures had been trained to perfection within it. Sterile technique was the foundation of surgery.

“Okay, Brother Zhang, be gentle, I’m already scared of the pain,” Bayin said, now freezing up whenever doctors or nurses appeared.

“You should let Dr. Zhang press harder, otherwise you won’t remember anything,” Bayin’s mother remarked. Looking at Zhang Fan, he understood the underlying meaning.

“Don’t worry, it’s fine.”

The wound was healing well—no redness, swelling, heat, or pain. Zhang Fan gently pressed it, seeing no discharge. He then proceeded with disinfecting and bandaging. When he finished and looked up, Bayin was sweating profusely.

“Does it hurt?” Zhang Fan asked.

“No, it’s fine. He should exercise more; a real man shouldn’t be so sensitive to pain,” Batu said, then asked Zhang Fan, “The wound is healing nicely, right? Orthopedic surgery is always at risk of infection. Nur and the others often had postoperative infections before. Not to mention surgical skill, the infections alone gave me headaches.”

“It should be fine,” Zhang Fan replied, preparing to leave for the office.

“Are you busy this afternoon? If not, come by my office.”

“All right, I’ll tidy up and come over.”

In the director’s office, Batu sat with Zhang Fan on the guest sofa and said, “You’ve worked hard these past few days. Take good care of Bayin. Though he’s about your age, he’s still immature, like a child—very stubborn. After all he’s been through, I hope he’ll grow up.”

“Director, rest assured, I will.”

“The universities have expanded enrollment. It used to be rare for even city hospitals to recruit university students, let alone our county hospital. Although other students can’t compare to you, their overall level is still decent. Recently, the regional government organized an entry exam, and several university students joined our hospital. There isn’t space for them in the dorms here, so we rented a big apartment in the county committee’s staff housing. I asked the office director to reserve a small bedroom for you to live alone. It’ll be more convenient for studying without disturbance.”

“The place I live now is fine. Living alone in a bedroom might be too much,” Zhang Fan said.

“No problem. Stay there with peace of mind. I’ve arranged everything. Tomorrow’s the weekend, so I’ll have Director Wang bring an ambulance to help you move. Here, take these two packs of Red Snow Lotus as housewarming gifts.” He tossed the two packs to Zhang Fan.

“Thank you, Director,” Zhang Fan said without hesitation.

Although the apartment was rented, Batu assigning the small bedroom to Zhang Fan was a subtle form of gratitude. As hospital director, he wouldn’t overtly thank a doctor, but when good things happened, Zhang Fan was always considered.

Recently, there had been many surgeries. The heavy snow had blocked the mountains, leaving the county hospital as the only option for the sick. If the blockade lasted a year, Zhang Fan’s trauma orthopedics skills would surely mature. Just as Zhang Fan returned to his office, the director called him back.

“There’s a child in Sumutai Township who was trampled by a horse, with a broken clavicle complicated by a pneumothorax. The condition is severe. The car can’t reach the county town. They called the health bureau, which reported to the county committee. The committee ordered the county hospital to send a doctor. You’re the best orthopedic surgeon we have. It’s a two-hour horseback ride. Can you manage?”

“Alright, then Shi Lei and Ma Lihua will accompany you. The security department will arrange three personnel and contact the county police to bring horses and sleds. Right now, only our county hospital can send doctors there. Whether you can manage or not, you have to go.”

“Let Dr. Chen come too. He’s in orthopedics as well. One more person, more safety.”

Zhang Fan hurried back to prepare and borrowed a military coat from the security department. It was now past three in the afternoon. The two-hour journey would be freezing without thick clothes. Under the coordination of the county committee, six from the hospital and two from the police set off within half an hour. The roads in the county town were still drivable, with an ambulance carrying patients and equipment, followed by a large truck hauling horses. When the vehicles couldn’t proceed, they would switch to horseback and sleds.

Sumutai Township stood nearly two thousand meters above sea level, much colder than the county town, mostly inhabited by herders. After half an hour by car, the road was blocked by thick snow. Seeing the icy world for the first time on a sled, Zhang Fan noted the endless white landscape.

“Director Shi, does this happen every year?”

“Not really. This winter’s snowfall is heavy. I’ve never encountered this before. It’s my first time too.”

“Sumutai Township was supposed to be relocated long ago, but the herders refused, so it was delayed. I’ve been to the countryside a few times. The township hospital has sufficient medicine but lacks doctors. Pregnant women give birth at home; if complications arise, it’s often fatal for both mother and child,” Ma Lihua said, tightening her coat.
