Chapter 6: The Engagement
Everyone was stunned, thinking they must have misheard. This young man actually proposed on his own initiative?
“You want to marry my second daughter?” Lin Guodong looked at Xiao Nan with surprise.
“That’s right,” Xiao Nan nodded.
He still remembered the old man saying that his body was special—he was born with a fiery poison and had to find a pure yin constitution to neutralize it before turning twenty.
Since he got into the Lin sisters’ car, he realized Lin Ziqing was born with a yin constitution, able to suppress the fiery poison within him.
Even if Lin Guodong hadn’t said anything, he would have found a way along these lines.
It was as if to say, if you want to nap, here’s a pillow.
“I don’t want to marry him! You scoundrel, you’ve been eyeing me all along,” Lin Ziqing said with resistance.
“You kept staring at me in the car; I knew you had ill intentions. I’d never marry you even if I were a ghost!” she added firmly.
“Shuyun, do you have any objections?” Lin Guodong ignored Lin Ziqing and asked his eldest daughter.
Lin Shuyun shook her head lightly and smiled gently. “Mr. Xiao can decide whom he wishes to marry. I have no objections.”
Her words sounded carefree, but no one noticed a fleeting sadness flashing in her beautiful eyes as she spoke.
“Alright, I agree,” Lin Guodong nodded softly.
“Dad, I don’t want to marry that lecher! How can you force me to marry such a scoundrel?” Lin Ziqing protested vehemently.
“I would never marry him in this life!” she insisted.
Lin Guodong’s eyes narrowed sharply. “Don’t you even listen to your father anymore?”
He coughed lightly twice.
Lin Ziqing’s face turned anxious; she glared at Xiao Nan with hatred but had no choice but to fall silent.
“Xiao Nan, then you shall be engaged to Ziqing. As for the engagement date, you two young people can choose it yourselves.”
“But I’m curious, Xiao Nan, why have you chosen my second daughter?” Lin Guodong asked.
His question was also on many others’ minds.
Lin Shuyun was gentle and soft-spoken—a sensible and kind wife and mother.
Lin Ziqing was straightforward, spoiled, and capricious—the typical temper of an eldest daughter.
Anyone would probably choose Lin Shuyun as a wife.
Xiao Nan smiled slightly. “Miss Lin, of course, is refined and gentle, graceful and admirable.”
“But everyone has their preferences; I happen to prefer the second miss’s personality—headstrong yet endearing.”
Lin Shuyun heard the answer.
She lowered her head, hiding the disappointment in her eyes.
So that was it. Xiao Nan didn’t like the gentle her, but the straightforward younger sister.
“Well said! Since you like her, I will support you!” Lin Guodong exclaimed.
“You are about to be engaged soon; this engagement period is a good time to nurture your feelings.”
“Ziqing, today Xiao Nan will go back to your villa with you and your sister.”
Lin Guodong nodded in satisfaction.
Lin Ziqing looked at her father’s stern and commanding face.
Though her heart was filled with reluctance, she could only walk out of the hospital room first without a word.
“Mr. Xiao, please come with me,” Lin Shuyun smiled at Xiao Nan.
After Xiao Nan and Lin Shuyun left the hospital room, Lin Guodong’s wife, Li Ailing, could no longer hold back.
“Guodong, I’ve understood all your decisions over the years, but today’s decision baffles me.”
“Why would you betroth your daughter to a young man you’ve only known for two hours? Are you really at ease with this?”
“Even if it’s to repay a debt of gratitude, it doesn’t have to be like this, does it?”
Li Ailing was a mother; how could she not worry for her daughter?
Though Xiao Nan was a miraculous doctor, she didn’t know his character well enough yet, so naturally, she was concerned for her daughter.
“Yes, big brother, I really don’t understand why you would do this. If it’s truly to repay a favor, the Lin family has many other ways,” Lin Guoliang chimed in.
Lin Guoan, though silent, wore an expression that showed he also didn’t understand their eldest brother’s decision.
Hearing their words, Lin Guodong shook his head and smiled lightly.
“I have my reasons.”
“Decades ago, our Lin family suffered a great blow—you all know that. You know I single-handedly turned the tide and saved the family.”
“But you don’t know that I was able to do so because a master Taoist with extraordinary powers helped behind the scenes.”
“Before he left, that old Taoist cast a divination for the Lin family, saying that our family would face a great calamity in the future. At that time, a person with the fate of a true dragon would come to the Lin family, not only saving us from ruin but elevating our family to unimaginable heights.”
Hearing this, the Lin family members exchanged glances.
If such words came from anyone else, they would be skeptical.
But coming from Lin Guodong, they knew they had to consider it carefully.
After all, their eldest brother had no reason to lie.
“How do you know that young man is Xiao Nan?” Li Ailing asked again.
“I asked the old Taoist the same question back then. He only smiled mysteriously and said that through chance and fate, I would come to understand.”
“That person would not only save the Lin family from hardship but also save me from the brink of death.”
“Connecting the dots with what the old Taoist said and seeing Xiao Nan’s extraordinary skills, it naturally must be him.”
After a pause, Lin Guodong pondered briefly.
“Moreover, even if the true dragon fate holder isn’t Xiao Nan…”
“Given that Xiao Nan’s medical skills already earn the praise of Xu Wei at such a young age, his future is boundless!”
“He is destined to soar, and it’s not inappropriate for the Lin family to establish ties with him.”
“Big brother, since this is a well-thought-out decision, we are relieved,” Lin Guoliang breathed a sigh of relief.
Lin Guodong glanced at him. “Did you think I made this suggestion on a whim just to repay a favor?”
Lin Guoliang chuckled, “No, no, I knew your decisions always have your reasons.”
Outside the First People’s Hospital, Lin Ziqing drove to her villa, her face full of resentment.
Through the rearview mirror, she looked at Xiao Nan’s handsome face, feeling not the slightest fondness but only disgust.
“Xiao Nan, I warn you, I only agreed to my father’s request because his health has just recovered, and I don’t want to anger him. That doesn’t mean I accept you.”
“You’d better not have any improper ideas about me. When we get back, I’ll set three rules for you.”
“First, you can only stay on the first floor; the second floor, where my sister and I live, is off-limits.”
“Second, you are not allowed to walk around the villa shirtless.”
“Third, you must not bring strangers back to the villa.”
“Otherwise, you will regret it for life!”
