Chapter 5: The Divine Healer
Suddenly!
The entire ward fell into a deathly silence; you could hear a pin drop. Everyone stood there, mouths agape, as if they had each stuffed an egg into their mouths, utterly stunned. Lin Guodong, who had been on the brink of death just a moment ago, had actually sat up! It was a medical miracle—a true miracle!
He Zhonghai scrambled to arrange a full-body examination for Lin Guodong. To his astonishment, he found that all of Lin Guodong’s organs had regained their vitality and were no different from those of a healthy person. He Zhonghai looked as if he had seen a ghost, his face filled with shock. Lin Guodong’s internal organs had been on the verge of total failure; even if he had been cured, he should have remained in a state of extreme weakness. How could he possibly be like a normal person?
The attending physicians at the First People’s Hospital felt their long-held worldviews crumbling. They, masters and doctors who had graduated from prestigious medical schools, had been at their wits' end, yet a young man had resolved the condition with just a few silver needles. If they hadn't seen it with their own eyes, who would believe it?
"Divine Physician Xu, thank you," Lin Guodong said, sitting half-upright on the hospital bed, his complexion still slightly pale.
Xu Wei dared not accept the praise and hurriedly waved his hands. "Mr. Lin, you are too kind. The one who saved you was not me, but this young man."
Hearing this, Lin Guodong widened his eyes, disbelieving. "Divine Physician Xu, what kind of joke is this? In this world, besides you, who else possesses such brilliant medical skills?"
Lin Shuyun spoke up then: "Dad, it really was Mr. Xiao who saved you."
Lin Guodong frowned, still skeptical. "Young man, was it really you?"
Xiao Nan shrugged. "Who else?"
"Good! Truly a hero among youth! Just for saving my life today, the Lin family will surely reward you handsomely!"
At that moment, Xu Wei walked respectfully toward Xiao Nan and bowed. "Senior, your medical skills are indeed extraordinary. I was blind and failed to recognize a true master. I beg you to give me a chance and take me as your disciple. I am willing to follow you and carry forward our medical arts!"
Xiao Nan waved him off. "You are too old. Your future prospects are limited; it will be difficult for you to improve further. However, since your character seems decent, I can offer you some guidance in the future. As for taking you on as a disciple, we shall see."
The people in the ward were at a loss for words. Xu Wei, one of the three great divine physicians of Luocheng, had actually asked to be the disciple of a mere youngster—and the youngster seemed unwilling.
"Very well, thank you, Senior. If I encounter any problems in my research that I cannot understand, I will come to consult you." Xu Wei was not offended; after exchanging contact information with Xiao Nan, he left.
Once only the core members of the Lin family remained in the room, Lin Guo’an approached Xiao Nan, took a deep breath, and bowed deeply. "Little brother, my attitude just now was indeed my fault. I thought you were a charlatan, but I didn't expect you to be a true master. Please accept my apologies."
"It's nothing," Xiao Nan said with a faint smile. He actually quite liked Lin Guo’an; he was someone who took responsibility for his actions and acted on his own initiative. Perhaps it was a temperament cultivated in the military.
"Little brother, this bank card contains ten million. It is a token of gratitude for saving my brother. The password is six zeros. If you have any problems in the future, feel free to come to me, Lin Guoliang." Lin Guoliang handed a bank card to Xiao Nan.
Xiao Nan didn't even look at it, taking it and tossing it directly into his pocket. This made Lin Guoliang admire him even more.
"Younger sister, aren't you going to apologize to Mr. Xiao?" Lin Shuyun said to her sister.
"I'm sorry," Lin Ziqing muttered, clearly unwilling. She really hadn't expected Xiao Nan to have such superb medical skills, but she still felt uncomfortable. So what if he was a skilled doctor? He was still a lecher.
Lin Guodong smiled and gestured for Xiao Nan to come closer. "Brother Xiao, where are you from, and what do your parents do?"
"I have no parents; my master raised me since I was young," Xiao Nan replied truthfully.
"And your master?" Lin Guodong asked again.
"He has passed away." A trace of sorrow appeared on Xiao Nan’s face.
Lin Guodong sighed, while the other members of the Lin family exchanged confused glances. They didn't understand what Lin Guodong was doing, acting like he was conducting a background check. Logically, since Xiao Nan had saved his life, the family should have just thanked him and left it at that.
"Brother Xiao, are you married?" Lin Guodong continued.
This question made everyone uneasy; it was far too intrusive.
"I was supposed to be. I came to Luocheng because my master had arranged a marriage for me, but to my surprise, when I arrived, the family didn't recognize it. So, it's off." Xiao Nan gave a wry smile and briefly explained the situation regarding the Xie family.
To his surprise, Lin Guodong burst into laughter. "Good, good! That is wonderful! It's fortunate that the Xie family is blind; I really should thank them!"
"Dad, what are you talking about?" Lin Ziqing asked, unable to hold back. "We don't understand any of this. Why are you asking Xiao Nan so many questions?"
Lin Guodong ignored her and continued looking at Xiao Nan. "That Xie family truly lacks the ability to judge character; no wonder they have remained a small, third-rate family for so long. Since the Xie family doesn't want you, our Lin family does! Brother Xiao, would you be willing to marry my daughter?"
"What!?" As soon as Lin Guodong finished speaking, several cries of shock rang out in the ward.
"Dad!"
"Big brother!"
Without waiting for Xiao Nan to reply, he continued, "Shuyun, you and Xiao Nan should pick an auspicious date and get engaged soon."
Lin Shuyun looked at Xiao Nan shyly, a spark of interest flashing in her beautiful eyes.
"Dad, how can you marry off sister to someone she's known for less than two hours?" Lin Ziqing immediately objected.
Lin Guo’an and Lin Guoliang exchanged looks and tried to persuade him as well. "That's right, big brother. I also think this is too fast. At least give the young people some time. This isn't the era of arranged marriages anymore. Let the young people develop their relationship themselves; let Shuyun decide her own marriage."
Lin Guodong turned his gaze to Lin Shuyun and asked, "Shuyun, do you dislike him?"
Lin Shuyun was embarrassed. She glanced at Xiao Nan, then shook her head. Her face flushed to the roots of her hair, making her look stunningly beautiful.
"Doesn't that settle it?" Lin Guodong said. "Feelings can be cultivated over time. You two are a perfect match, and after spending time together, affection will naturally grow. Besides, the Lin family has a vast foundation, and Brother Xiao has such great skills; you are well-matched."
Lin Guodong looked satisfied, as if he had finally settled a major concern.
"Big brother..." Lin Guoliang tried to say something more, but Lin Guodong cut him off.
"Enough, you don't need to persuade me anymore. I have considered this carefully. There is no point in saying more. Shuyun, you pick a time and see when you and Xiao Nan can get engaged."
Everyone sensed Lin Guodong’s firm attitude; even if they wanted to say more, it was difficult to speak up.
Just then, Xiao Nan, who had remained silent, finally spoke. "Mr. Lin, I don't have any objections, but may I make a request?"
Lin Guodong laughed heartily. "Of course! Whatever your request, just name it, and I will fulfill it."
"My request is simple: I would like to ask if Mr. Lin would be willing to betroth the second miss, Lin Ziqing, to me instead?" Xiao Nan said with a smile.
