Feeling in the mood tonight?
Tang Yuan immediately drove back to Moon Bay and waited until the middle of the night before Shen Zhou finally returned.
He looked somewhat exhausted, unbuttoning his shirt as he cast his gaze toward her at the doorway.
"You're still not asleep?"
Tang Yuan closed the door, lowered her eyelashes, and stepped forward to help him with his tie.
Accustomed to her tender care over the years, Shen Zhou relaxed his hands and spoke in a mild tone, "Are you still worrying about the director?"
She murmured an assent. "The hospital has been searching for a kidney source all along. I don't know if they've found one yet."
Shen Zhou raised a hand to massage his brow. "Things like this cannot be rushed."
Tang Yuan watched as he took a bathrobe from the cabinet and walked straight into the bathroom, leaving his cell phone resting casually on the bed.
For the two years of their marriage, she had always been docile and poised, never once stepping out of line, which was why he held no guard against her.
The Tang family was her shackle, and her love for Shen Zhou was an even deeper one.
Both of them had always assumed she would forever remain a well-behaved, obedient doll.
Lowering her eyelashes, she gazed at the phone.
When Shen Zhou emerged, he found her still lingering and raised an eyebrow slightly before giving a soft laugh. "Feeling in the mood tonight?"
She walked over to the nearby sofa and picked up the suit jacket he had tossed onto the floor, playing the perfect picture of a devoted and domestic woman.
"Shen Zhou, if something happens to the director, I will be devastated."
Shen Zhou paused in the middle of drying his hair with a towel and offhandedly pulled out a cigarette. "My love, if the director truly meets with any misfortune, I promise you that the Shen Corporation will take over the orphanage. How about that?"
A weight sank heavily into the depths of Tang Yuan's heart.
She no longer needed to argue with Shen Zhou over the matter of the kidney source, because this man had already made his choice long ago.
Shen Zhou was a man of cold detachment and unyielding heart; whatever willingness he now showed to take over the orphanage stemmed entirely from a lingering trace of faint guilt within him.
He had known all along that the kidney source he intercepted belonged to the director.
Lowering her eyelashes, she curved her lips in a faint, bitter smile. "With your word, I can rest easy. I'm going off to rest now."
Shen Zhou leaned in and pressed a kiss to her cheek. "You've been angry for so long and still haven't gotten over it? Are you really not going to sleep with your husband tonight?"
"No. I've been having nightmares lately, and I'm afraid of disturbing you."
With that, she turned and walked straight out of the room.
The tenderness in Shen Zhou's eyes vanished completely the moment the door clicked shut.
His phone rang again—it was a call from the hospital.
He lowered his head and flicked his lighter to ignite the cigarette. "Does she know about this?"
"We haven't had the chance to inform Miss Tang yet."
"Good. Keep it that way."
"Mr. Shen, then the surgery will be scheduled for half a month from now. Does that meet with your approval?"
"As soon as possible."
Standing on the balcony, he flicked the ash from his cigarette and the corners of his lips curved upward. "Make sure to secure the best specialists."
"Rest assured."
Tang Yuan found herself unable to sleep after returning to her bedroom.
The kidney source had already been intercepted by the other party. If the director missed this opportunity, God only knew how many more two-year waits lay ahead.
He could not afford to wait.
She had to find a way.
Early the next morning, she managed to find out that the surgery for the Shen Corporation's senior executive was scheduled for half a month later.
Within that fortnight, she had to ensure the director received this kidney transplant.
Shen Zhou attached great importance to this upcoming matter; nothing short of an absolute emergency would pull him away from Imperial City.
She drew and erased numerous scenarios on her tablet until she finally settled on a viable plan.
She contacted a close friend residing abroad, who happened to move in the circles of the foreign entertainment industry.
Upon hearing her proposal, the friend could not help but offer one last warning, "This is rather risky."
Tang Yuan drew a deep breath, her gaze resolute. "I'll have to trouble you with the arrangements over there."
"Alright then. Let's just hope you can pull off the impossible."
A week later, in the dead of night, Tang Yuan hugged a pillow and walked over to the side of the bed in Shen Zhou's master bedroom.
She carried a glass of milk, took a sip herself, and left the remaining large portion on the bedside table.
Seeing her slip beneath the covers, Shen Zhou wrapped an arm around her waist, stroking her with an ambiguous touch. "Why did you suddenly decide to come over?"
She remained silent, curling up quietly at the edge of the bed.
Shen Zhou finished the rest of the milk in her glass and lay down beside her. "Go to sleep. I'm exhausted tonight."
In the middle of the night, Tang Yuan slowly sat up and used his cell phone to make a call.
