Chapter Nine: Borrowing Money
Shaoqiu could not bear to be looked down upon like this, yet for a time he found no way to clear his shame and thus had to live in silence. From then on, in this desolate village, no one paid him any mind; no one was willing to go up the mountain to gather firewood or down to the river to catch fish with him. He was left alone in endless sorrow, watching the Dog Master pacing back and forth in front of his own door.
The villagers were so accustomed to the Dog Master’s behavior that they paid it no heed at all. They never sympathized with Shaoqiu; only contempt was shown. As for the Dog Master, they fawned over him in every way possible, flattering him to the utmost. This made Shaoqiu wish he could die immediately.
One day, the weather was quite fine. Shaoqiu slung a basket of firewood on his back and set off along the steep mountain path, heading deep into the hills. Taking advantage of the clear weather, he wanted to gather some wood so that on rainy days he could rest easy.
Along the mountain path, he saw the Dog Master again. The man also carried a basket, presumably to collect firewood. But as soon as the Dog Master saw Shaoqiu, he spat and cursed loudly, then stepped forward and slapped Shaoqiu across the face.
Seeing the Dog Master so strong and fierce, Shaoqiu knew he was no match and could only helplessly endure the slap.
“Damn you! I come here to gather firewood, and you come too? You want to compete with me?” the Dog Master spat. “If I catch you again, it won’t be just a slap. I might even chop off your hand and burn it as firewood.”
“Dog Master, I’m not deliberately opposing you. I just came to see if I could find some firewood up here. Since you say so, I won’t gather firewood on the mountain anymore. Will that be alright?” Shaoqiu said.
“From now on, I don’t think you need to come up the mountain at all. All the mushrooms up here are mine. If you see them, don’t pick them. Otherwise, I won’t tolerate it,” the Dog Master warned.
“Dog Master, rest assured, I would never dare pick the mushrooms you grow. If I did, I’d let you hit and scold me all you want. How’s that?” Shaoqiu replied, then deliberately smiled at the Dog Master.
“Hmph,” the Dog Master said, “You can go.”
Hearing this, Shaoqiu didn’t dare move forward. It was not worth offending the Dog Master. Better to go along with him to avoid future trouble.
“Alright, thank you, Dog Master. I’m leaving now,” Shaoqiu said.
“Come back!” the Dog Master called out again. “Eat this!”
“What is it?” Shaoqiu asked.
“It’s my diarrhea. I just dropped it,” the Dog Master said.
“There’s no way I’m eating that,” Shaoqiu, still clear-headed, said firmly.
“Will you eat it or not?” The Dog Master’s face was already ugly.
“Fine, but you mustn’t tell anyone when you go back. If people find out, it’ll be a huge disgrace. Don’t you agree?” Shaoqiu said, then covered his mouth with his hand, clearly unable to bear the foul smell.
With no other choice, Shaoqiu bent down and swallowed the Dog Master’s fresh excrement. But halfway through, he began to vomitI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
