Chapter 8 The Lost Daughter of the Bai Family Has Been Found
Sang Ye picked up the little white cat and hurried outside. As she passed the cage, she took the opportunity to place the cat inside, stroked it gently, and said, "I have things to attend to today; I'll make you something delicious tomorrow."
After locking up the clinic, Sang Ye rushed all the way home.
The house had indeed been searched. Although the signs were subtle, Sang Ye was meticulous in everything she did and knew every corner of her home like the back of her hand.
She strode to the bedside table and saw that the box her grandfather had left her had been opened. It had been carelessly discarded on the table, and some of the items inside had even been violently dismantled.
Because it was a keepsake from her grandfather, she had always cherished it. She only opened it when she missed him, and she would take it out every few days to wipe it clean; the box had always been kept in pristine condition.
But now, the contents were in disarray, and some were even damaged, igniting a surge of fury in Sang Ye.
Xie Yirou usually took things from her, which she could overlook, but she should never, ever have touched the legacy her grandfather left behind!
She was an abandoned infant; had her grandfather not taken her in, she would never have grown up safely. To her, her grandfather was the most important person in the world.
Sang Ye suppressed her anger, forcing herself to calm down.
Xie Yirou never did anything without a motive. It was likely that the scene at the shop tonight had been orchestrated by her as well, all for the purpose of obtaining the key to that box.
Otherwise, how could it be such a coincidence that Xie Yirou went to steal her key exactly when someone was causing a scene at the clinic?
Xie Yirou visited the shop every few days and knew exactly where Sang Ye kept her things. It was said that the lock on her grandfather's box was extremely difficult to pick, impossible for an ordinary locksmith to open.
That explained the drama today.
She had gone to such great lengths to steal the key because there must have been something inside the box worth the trouble.
Sang Ye carefully checked the contents and found that one item was missing.
Although she didn't know why that item was worth such effort, given Xie Yirou's nature, she figured she would soon find out what the woman was planning.
If she went to confront Xie Yirou now, the woman would certainly deny everything. Even with the clinic's surveillance footage, it would be impossible to prove that she had stolen the heirloom. At most, the footage would only show her taking something, but it wouldn't show exactly what it was.
Rather than alerting the enemy, it was better to wait and watch, and let her come to her!
Sang Ye put the scattered items back into the box and, after a thorough inspection, returned it to its original place.
She originally thought she would have to wait a while, but to her surprise, only two days later, she discovered the purpose behind Xie Yirou's theft.
The shop was quiet that day when Sang Ye received a friend request. She clicked on it and saw the note: Pei Jun.
The profile picture was a photo of clouds.
With the simple two-character name and the cloud photo, Sang Ye immediately guessed who it was. She accepted the request.
Sang Ye initiated the greeting: "Hello, Mr. Pei. Is there something wrong with Yun Duo?"
Pei Jun: "Yun Duo hasn't wanted to eat for the past two days."
Sang Ye asked: "Has she had any probiotics? Is she refusing all food? Even the things she used to like?"
Pei Jun: "Yes."
Sang Ye knew he wasn't one for words. Based on his response, she gathered he must have tried changing her food, but she wouldn't eat anything, or else he wouldn't have reached out to her directly.
Sang Ye thought for a moment and asked: "Does she have any other unusual behaviors?"
Pei Jun: "She won't eat or drink, and she keeps trying to run outside."
This left Sang Ye somewhat confused, so she said, "It's hard to tell what's going on with Yun Duo over the phone. Why don't you bring her to the shop? I'll give her a check-up."
Pei Jun: "Okay."
Looking at his brief responses, Sang Ye had no doubt that if it weren't for the need to ask about Yun Duo, this Mr. Pei wouldn't have said a single word.
Just then, Yao Yao, who was scrolling through her phone, suddenly saw a news story.
The long-lost daughter of the wealthy Bai family in Longhu City had been found.
Yao Yao zoomed in. At first glance, the woman looked a bit familiar. When she looked closer, she realized she absolutely recognized her!
The person in the photo was none other than Sang Ye's cousin, Xie Yirou.
The Bai family hadn't just held a high-profile banquet for all the prominent figures in Longhu City; they had also gifted her five percent of the Bai Corporation's shares and a mansion worth hundreds of millions.
Overnight, Xie Yirou became the envy of countless people in Longhu City. After all, leaping from an ordinary family to being the daughter of a wealthy tycoon was more than just a change in social class.
The Bai family, while not quite on the level of the Pei family, was still among the top five wealthy clans in Longhu City. The only ones who could stand side-by-side with the Pei family were the Xing family. These two families were the local powerhouses; the Xing family focused primarily on politics, unlike the Pei family, which held power in both sectors.
The Pei and Xing families were long-time friends with an excellent relationship. Pei Jun and Xing Hao were the most outstanding of their generation. They had grown up together and were very close.
Rumor had it that the newly found daughter of the Bai family was betrothed to the third young master of the Pei family.
Although it was rumored that the third young master had some health issues, it was the Pei family nonetheless. The benefits that could come from being associated with them were immeasurable.
Sang Ye didn't have time to follow such news; she only found out when Yao Yao complained to her about it.
To Yao Yao's surprise, she had been casually reading gossip and ended up finding someone she knew. She showed the phone to Sang Ye and tutted, "Xie Yirou has really gone from rags to riches. Oh, wait, I can't call her Xie Yirou anymore; she's Bai Yirou now."
She rested her chin on her hand, looking thoughtful. "I heard that the third young master of the Pei family has some health problems. I wonder if Bai Yirou is willing to marry him."
She sighed, "Well, it's not my business to worry about. They are so rich now, and there's endless wealth waiting for her if she marries into the family. She loves money so much, she'll definitely agree, right, Sister Sang Ye?"
Yao Yao's gaze was fixed on the phone, failing to notice Sang Ye's reaction.
Sang Ye stared at the news on Yao Yao's phone, and everything in her mind clicked into place.
She understood now why Xie Yirou had gone to such lengths to steal the heirloom left by her grandfather, and why she didn't want Sang Ye to know. It was because she didn't want Sang Ye to disrupt her plans before she succeeded.
But Xie Yirou certainly hadn't expected that she had already figured it all out.
The fact that she was adopted was known to the entire Xie family. When her grandfather was dying, he had told her to keep that item safe, saying it might be related to her background, but she had never cared about her origins.
After all, if they truly cared about her being lost, why hadn't they looked for her for all these years? Since they didn't care about her, she saw no reason to humiliate herself by seeking them out.
However, one thing still puzzled Sang Ye: A wealthy family like the Bais wouldn't just accept a relative without a DNA test. How on earth did Xie Yirou manage to deceive the Bai family and successfully get recognized?
