Chapter 6: If Necessary, I Can Testify for You

Upon hearing this, Sang Ye nodded in agreement. "Then let's call the police."
With that, she truly took out her phone, preparing to report the incident.
Seeing Sang Ye actually ready to call the authorities, the couple visibly panicked. They were only trying to cause trouble for money, never expecting it to escalate to involving the police!
If it really went to the station, their scheme would be exposed. In that case, not only would they lose the remaining payment, but they might also find themselves in a worse situation.
Besides, the remaining balance alone wasn’t worth the trouble of a police visit.
The couple exchanged uneasy glances, both seeing a trace of panic in each other's eyes.
But recalling the promises made, the man braced himself and stepped forward to try to stop Sang Ye from calling the police. His voice was harsh: "How do we know you weren’t in cahoots with them beforehand? It’s true our Kuge got sick after eating your dog food, but you’re just trying to dodge responsibility."
Pei Jun stepped forward silently, without a word or even raising his hand. The man’s aggression was immediately subdued. Remembering the strength Pei Jun had shown when gripping his hand, the man instinctively recoiled as he reached for the phone.
Sang Ye felt a shadow fall before her eyes. Recognizing Pei Jun, she stared blankly at his profile for a few seconds before continuing to speak into the phone.
Meanwhile, the onlookers outside began to sense something was amiss.
"They’re clearly nervous, just repeating that it’s because of the dog food but refusing to hand it over or call the police. It’s obvious they’re hiding something!"
"Our Meili has always eaten food from this shop without any problems. Plus, she adores the owner. Every time I bring her for shots or grooming, she gets more excited to see Boss Sang than she does to see me. A pet’s affection hardly points to a bad person."
"Our dog was even boarded here for a while. When I came to pick him up, he didn’t want to leave, which shows he was happy there. If Boss Sang were really unscrupulous, with our little prince’s temper, he’d have been howling here every day."
The murmurs from the crowd grew louder, causing the couple’s faces to pale and flush intermittently.
Seeing the situation turning against them, they attempted to leave.
But the crowd outside blocked their way.
Just as the tension reached a stalemate, a siren wailed in the distance.
The police had arrived.
Several officers in uniform entered, approaching the group solemnly. One asked in a firm voice, "Who called the police?"
Sang Ye stepped out from Pei Jun’s protective circle and faced the officers. "I did," she said.

"I am the owner of this shop, Sang Ye."
She then briefly recounted the events, concluding, "The store has surveillance footage that captures the entire incident. Everyone present can testify. I am willing to cooperate fully with the investigation, and if it turns out to be our fault, I will take full responsibility."
"At the same time, I hope the police can uncover the truth and clear my name and that of my shop. Additionally, I expect compensation for all losses caused by their actions."
Sang Ye’s calm and straightforward stance even drew an approving glance from Pei Jun.
He hadn’t expected that the seemingly rash woman handled the situation with such clarity and firmness, refusing to bend just because the other party was male or to quietly let things slide.
In the past, Pei Jun would have avoided such trouble.
Perhaps his opinion of Sang Ye had changed, or maybe he felt compelled to make amends for previously judging her hastily. Rarely did he speak so frankly: "If you need, I can testify for you."
Sang Ye turned to look at him in surprise. Although brief, it was the longest sentence he had uttered since arriving at the shop—and it was said for her sake.
She sincerely thanked him, "Thank you."
The police officers appreciated Sang Ye’s cooperation.
From her account, it was clear this was a deliberate act of provocation.
Still, protocol had to be followed.
Their profession demanded impartiality and evidence-based judgment.
The couple seemed about to speak, but the officer cut them off: "We’ll discuss after reviewing the footage."
Turning to Sang Ye, the officer said, "We need to see the surveillance. Is that alright?"
Though no favoritism was shown, the tone softened noticeably when addressing her.
Sang Ye quickly replied, "Of course, this way, please."
She led two officers to the computer while another remained outside, likely to prevent the couple from fleeing and to gather witness statements.
After some time reviewing the footage, the police had a clearer understanding of the incident.

"Uncle Officers, you can’t let them off. If they dare to scam Boss Sang today, tomorrow they’ll scam others."
"That’s right! Boss Sang is a good person. You must investigate thoroughly."
"Young people these days, strong and capable, choosing not to work properly but instead ruining the reputation of their peers—such behavior must be severely punished."
The lead officer raised his voice, "Rest assured, everyone, we will get to the bottom of this."
Then he turned to the couple. "You claim your dog vomited and had diarrhea because of the dog food sold here. Where is the bag of dog food you mentioned?"
Their faces visibly paled. They hadn’t expected it to come to this.
There was no dog food.
They had simply fed their dog some medicine themselves. Now, where could they find this nonexistent bag?
Thinking quickly, the woman said, "It’s... at home. We didn’t bring it."
The man immediately chimed in, "Yes, we were in a hurry and forgot it."
The lead officer said to another officer, "Xiao Zhao, go with them to retrieve it."
"Alright," the younger officer nodded and looked at the couple. "Let’s go."
But the couple’s expressions soured; they clearly didn’t want to comply.
At that moment, the woman glanced toward the crowd outside. Seeing something, she relaxed slightly.
The lead officer, experienced in reading people, saw through their guilt and said coldly, "What, don’t want to get the evidence? If you refuse, your earlier statements will be considered false information, which is a criminal offense."
At the mention of jail, the couple immediately broke down. "We’ll tell you, we’ll tell you everything."
