After finishing grooming its fur, the little white cat obediently sat down, curling its two paws clad in white socks with its tail, while tilting its head slightly upward. Its ears twitched continuously, as if deep in thought.

“How can I warn this human? I really don’t want her to die—she’s a good person…”

Sang Ye remained silent.

If it weren’t for her habit of feeding stray cats, she wouldn’t have encountered this little white cat. Nor would she have realized that she had already been targeted by the serial killer.

The little white cat pondered and said, “Why don’t I just take the young lady to the place where the bad guy buried the bodies? Seeing the corpses should make her alert.”

Sang Ye: “...”

She would definitely thank it—at eleven at night, taking her to the serial killer’s corpse disposal site was essentially walking into a trap.

“Thank you, but right now I need to stay somewhere crowded and safe. I must not be alone!”

Sang Ye finished speaking, but her body was already one step ahead of her mind. She scooped up the white cat and headed toward the nearest hotel.

Her choice of hotel was simple: it had 24-hour surveillance, lots of people, and was the closest location. If the killer was truly after her, it would be much harder for him to strike there.

Sang Ye ran swiftly, clutching the white cat in her arms, which screamed in fright all the way, “Ah! I only ate your little dried fish—don’t kidnap me!”

“Help! Someone’s catching a cat!”

“Can someone do something?”

“I’m not mistaken—this has to be a cat abuser, right?”

“Waaah... I was wrong, I shouldn’t have been greedy. Please don’t kill me!”

Apparently, the little white cat hadn’t yet realized that Sang Ye could understand its words.

Sang Ye, terrified and fleeing for her life, was greatly annoyed by its noisy cries and quickly covered its mouth. “Be quiet.”

Her attention was entirely focused on the white cat in her arms, unaware that, just as she passed by, a shadow slipped into the bushes on the other side.

Covering the white cat’s mouth, Sang Ye dashed onto the main road, weaving through the traffic until she reached the hotel entrance. She carried the cat inside and checked in.

Only after receiving the room key and entering did her tense heart begin to ease slightly.

Standing by the window, she looked down. At eleven o’clock in the city, only a few scattered pedestrians wandered about—there was no sign of anyone suspicious.

Just then, the white cat in her arms suddenly said, “Huff, huff... ooh... I’m about to die! I’m probably the first cat to be smothered to death by a human…”

Sang Ye was startled by the unexpected voice and then remembered she had been covering the cat’s mouth so tightly out of nervousness.

She quickly bent down and apologized, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to.”

Her voice trembled, her breath uneven.

Hearing Sang Ye’s response, the white cat froze in surprise. “You can understand me? You can hear Cat Language?”

Each meow grew louder.

Sang Ye thought for a moment, then crouched to look the cat in the eye. “Yes, I can understand you. What you said is true? That serial killer has been following me for two days?”

The white cat nodded. “The night before last, when he was killing and burying bodies, you happened to pass by. Afterwards, my friends noticed he was tailing you. Last night, they tried to warn you, but you thought they were just playing.”

Hearing this, Sang Ye recalled that she hadn’t sensed anything unusual or heard strange sounds when she passed that area the night before last.

But last night, when the strays finished eating, they kept pawing at her pants. She thought they were still hungry and gave them more food. In her rush to leave, she hadn’t paid much attention. Now recalling this, a chill ran down her spine.

In other words, the serial killer had already followed her home last night. He might have even entered after she left. The mere thought terrified her heart almost out of her chest.

Frantically, she rummaged through her bag for her phone. Though frightened, she still needed to confirm, “Are you sure the person following me is the serial killer?”

The white cat nodded seriously. “I saw him kill with my own eyes. The place where he buried the bodies is in that very patch of woods.”

“Before he strikes, he always follows his victim for a while, then chooses the right moment to attack.”

Taking a deep breath, Sang Ye picked up her phone and dialed the police.

At the police station office, the news broadcast filled the room.

“It is reported that this is already the sixth murder case this month. The case has caused widespread panic among citizens, and authorities urge the police to apprehend the culprit promptly…”

“Slap!”

Chief Li turned off the TV, his face darkened as he slammed the desk hard. “Six murders in one month! After all this time, and you still haven’t cracked the case? If you’re not ashamed, I’m embarrassed for you!”

“I had to attend a meeting at the city bureau today, and I couldn’t even face anyone! What am I supposed to say? You tell me!”

“Am I supposed to say that within my jurisdiction six murders happened, the killer toyed with us, and we were helpless?!”

“The higher-ups have issued a strict order: if this case isn’t solved within three days, we’re all finished.”

Everyone had been awake for more than thirty hours straight, chasing leads nonstop since the new report came in yesterday morning.

But Chief Li’s words silenced the room.

Six murders in a month, all in their jurisdiction, and they still hadn’t caught the killer—it was a failure on every police officer’s part.

Just then, the office door was flung open with force.

“Chief Li, Captain Xing, there’s a lead in the serial murder case!”

Though utterly exhausted, the moment these words were spoken, everyone instantly perked up with renewed vigor.
