Chapter 50: A Band of Cunning Foxes

At a Rex Research Institute not far from the bridge, a man in a white lab coat stared feverishly at the screen before him. “Zoe, haha, how do you like my little treasures?” he exclaimed.
“Tanks, witches, chargers, smokers, hunters, spitters, jockeys. Look—such beautiful creatures! How many rounds will those survivors last? One? Two?” His face twisted with manic delight.
The screen displayed the scene near the bridge, and Li Changsheng and his companions were clearly visible.
“Laut Kuhn, we’re researching these infected not to watch monsters slaughter humans, but for the future of humanity! You’re too cold-blooded!” The woman beside Laut, named Zoe, replied icily.
She wore her hair short, a white lab coat barely covering her thighs, black high heels, and her figure was striking—curves ablaze, her beauty cool and sharp as flame.
“For humanity’s future?” Laut sneered, “Zoe, what future is there for such inferior creatures? You’re too naive, Zoe.”
“You’ve lost your mind, Laut.” Zoe snorted and fell silent.
A cold glint flashed in Laut’s eyes, though he hid it well.
Once, Zoe believed they were kindred spirits. Now she saw they were not. From this moment forward, she could only apologize...
An ominous smile crept across Laut’s face as he ordered, “The T1 project is nearly complete. Before that, record data on this group of infected. This scene—”
What is the doctor planning?
What’s the point in recording a one-sided slaughter?
Zoe gazed at the screen, her brows furrowed with sympathy for Li Changsheng and his party. Against so many infected, their chances of survival were nil.
But soon, resolve stiffened her gaze. She murmured, “For the future of humanity...”
...
Elsewhere.
As Li Changsheng jumped from the half-raised bridge, Bill and the others froze, exchanging glances.
Where was he going?
Zoe couldn’t help but shout, “Are you insane? Don’t throw your life away!”
“The engine’s up to you. Raise the bridge—I’ll keep the infected at bay,” Li Changsheng called.
Before his words had faded, he’d already leapt to the rooftop on the right side of the bridge.
The building was only three stories high, but its roof offered a wide vantage.
Moo!
The tank had spotted him.
Li Changsheng felt the building tremble beneath him.
Excellent!
Zzz—
He unzipped the black bag; a flash of silver—he hefted the Gatling gun from the Terminator world to his chest.
Come, let me see what you’re made of!
Rat-a-tat-tat-tat...
With the world-ending roar of the Gatling, the infected at the front fell like wheat before the scythe.
Bullets twenty centimeters long tore through bodies, shattering the infected by the dozens.
Even the tank at the front had its chest riddled with holes, black blood spurting out, and glimpses of white bone within.
The tank’s momentum stalled.

“Oh my God!” Zoe gasped, covering her mouth in delight.
Francis and Louis leapt up in shock.
Louis ignored the pain in his leg, shaking off his earlier gloom. “Guys, call me an optimist, but this time it looks like we might actually make it.”
Francis trembled, dryly muttering, “Louis, you finally got it right. This guy...this guy’s a beast. He’s tougher than Schwarzenegger...”
Bill clenched an unlit cigarette between his teeth, his eyes brightening. “Guys, let’s move—we can’t leave him in danger for too long. Cover me, I’ll start the engine!”
“Bill!” Zoe called out anxiously.
He smiled at her. “Don’t worry, kid. Those bastards are all distracted by him on the other side!”
Without hesitation, he jumped from the bridge.
Roar!
The wounded tank at the front let out an ear-splitting bellow, snatched up a car, and hurled it with both hands.
The car spun through the air like a shell, crashing down toward Li Changsheng.
No honor!
Li Changsheng cursed, rolling aside as the car slammed into the rooftop, sending up a cloud of debris.
Just then—
Ah~
A shrill, piercing scream echoed from above.
Li Changsheng looked up to see a shadow leaping from another rooftop.
A special infected—Hunter!
His eyes narrowed.
Hunter possessed the vision, hearing, and smell of a feline, its claws sharper than any cat’s. If it pinned you down, agony was inevitable.
Li Changsheng kicked off, sliding backward, swinging the Gatling’s barrel skyward.
Rat-a-tat-tat...
Hunter, airborne, couldn’t dodge. The Gatling shredded him.
As Li Changsheng sat up, barely catching his breath, Zoe’s alarmed cry rang out.
“Watch out—Smoker!”
A fifty-foot tongue whipped from the shadowy rooftop behind him, wrapping around his torso.
Bang, bang, bang.
Zoe and the others fired, but the distance was too great—their bullets missed.
Ehehe~ Ehehe~
Jockey’s twisted laughter echoed from below. If Li Changsheng stayed trapped, a Jockey headshot was inevitable.
Worse still, from the corner of his eye, he saw a Spitter—its mouth gaping, leaking corrosive green fluid, staring hungrily at him.
Damn!

These sneaky bastards!
Inside the research institute.
Laut’s face flushed as he watched the screen. Such perfect coordination! Such perfect specimens!
Beside him, Zoe’s heart sank; she bit her lip.
She’d hoped this Asian man might work a miracle, but there were simply too many special infected.
No matter how skilled, he couldn’t survive this...
At the bridge, the others grew anxious.
“Guys, he’s caught—let’s help him!”
“I’m ready!”
Suddenly—
Laut’s eyes widened, disbelief etched across his face.
Zoe and the others froze in their tracks!
Li Changsheng raised his leg, wrapped it around Smoker’s tongue, and flung it violently to the side.
Smoker was hurled by tremendous force, crashing toward Li Changsheng and slamming into the ground, raising a cloud of dust.
You controlled me in the game because of game mechanics. Here, my strength is greater than yours, my stats higher—how can you hold me!
Annoyed, Li Changsheng drew a dagger from his spatial pocket and sliced through Smoker’s tongue.
The tongue was incredibly elastic and tough; he felt bound and uncomfortable.
A chill swept behind him—Li Changsheng spun, shoved with the Gatling, and flung the dagger, burying it in Jockey’s head.
In his previous life, he’d always been wary of Hunters and Jockeys in the game.
Rat-a-tat.
He shot down the Spitter stupid enough to run up and spray poison at him.
Click!
The Gatling’s magazine was finally empty.
Li Changsheng frowned.
Four tanks remained.
He could run, but now he was fired up.
Besides, the more dire the situation, the more it stimulated the G-cells.
He might even evolve.
With this thought, he grabbed a magical potion from his spatial pocket, downed it, and drew a fire axe from the bag.
Feeling the magic rejuvenate him, Li Changsheng looked down from above at the tanks climbing toward him.
“Let’s have a bloody battle!”
